Winchester Model 21

I'm trying to determine the manufacture date of a model 21 with a serial number of 25184. Also, how common/rare is the model 21 having 3" barrels insted of 2 3/4?

The stock on the model 21 appears to have been cut but a very professional job; the LOP is 13". How much would this de-value the gun?

    I've got a chance to pick up a Winchester model 21. It is a 12 gauge with 26" barrels and has a single trigger with extractors. The bluing on the barrels is at least 98% but the bluing on the bottom of the receiver is at least half gone as well as the bottom of the trigger guard, the sides of the receiver are still very nice, it has a name professionally engraved on one side of the receiver. The stock and forearm are original to the gun and have only one or two small knicks in the finish. It is the standard field grade gun. I can get it for $2000. Think I should take it or leave it? I wouldn't use it to hunt with, I'd just put it away for a few years and hope for a return on my money.

    Its worth about that! The extractors and the name engraved on the gun both detract. HUNT WITH IT!

    For that price you should buy it and hunt it. One like that sold for 3K here. Someone wanted it to hunt with. I thought the price was high for the condition. Shows how much I know. If you are buying for an investment, it will not go up like stocks. Do not expect it to. I have a safe full of "investments" that I can probably get what I paid, maybe, out of them.

    Good morning knifeusercollections: Lets see, 98% barrel blue, 26in barrels, single triger, the blueing on the floor plate is thin, which would be expected, name engraved on the receiver side. Price $2000.

    Short barrels usually mean more open chokes, possibly WS-1&WS-2, Cyl & Imp/Cyl maybe Imp/Cyl $ Mod. curious as to what the chokes are. You don't mention the serial number, so I don't know if it's a very early Md 21 with a semi-pistol grip stock, or later with the full pistol grip butt stock, capped or uncapped pistol grip, or possibly a straight pull, (english butt stock). Nor do you mention if it has a "Splinter or beavertail forearm".

    Single selective trigger was an option, you may want to double check the (extractors/ejectors) The Md 21 used "auto-ejectors" meaning it only ejected spent shells, if the barrel had not been fired, and you opened it up it would only raise the shell so it could be removed. Not only that, not knowing the vintage of the gun, extractors were no longer used after 1941. You don't mention the Safety, is it an automatic safety, non-auto safety, or no safety at all? These were the options available.

    $2000 is a great price, even with a name engraved on the side. Depending on how deep it is, the frame could be "restored" thus polishing off the the name. (You could always legally change your name to match the gun too! LOL) Md 21 parts are at a premium, the barrels alone will sell for $1500 and up depending on the chokes, and if they are original length. Providing it doesn't have the early stocks, and a real short LOP, Md 21 used stock sets usually start at $500 and go up rapidly depending on exactly what you have. Finding a Md 21 with a single trigger under $3500 is very hard today, so at $2000 I don't see where you can go wrong here. As a couple of others have said, I would be interested, if you don't buy it I will!

    The only thing I would check, is the inside diameter of the barrel at the muzzle. Measure the choke, to ensure that the chokes are still there and it wasn't a 28 or 30 in barrel that someone had shortened.
