Remington 550

Anyone familiar with this rifle? I just bought one on GB and the seller stated it shot just fine but after taking it to try it out I discovered it wont feed and it appears that the carrier isnt rising up enough for the bullet to enter the chamber. Ive torn it down including the floating chamber and cleaned up everything with kerosene and wuite a lot of dirt came out as the kerosene turned almost black. Tried to cycle a few more rounds and the same problem exists. Question, since this is a 550 with the bolt having two extractors can i replace the bolt and carrier using 550-1 parts, also any ideas as to what my problem might be before i spend money on these parts??

    I have owned this since 1970 (my first new gun) and don't know how to take it apart for cleaning. I want to know how to remove the bolt.
    Also, can the trigger be lightened?

    I wasn't trying to be 'flip' with that answer. If you've owned this rifle for 35 years and have never taken it apart you shouldn't start now. these rifles have springs that 'go flying' and a 'floating chamber' that is trikey for a novice.

    These rifles really ain't that complicated. Any monkey could take it apart and reassemble it. Go to Fleabay and spend 5 bucks for Remington 550 Field Service manual. It is step by step. You can't go wrong.

    I just registered at Rimfire and will post same.
    I have had the thing apart but could not figure out how to remove the bolt to give it a good scrubbing.
    Went back together great and shoots and feeds well (exc Stingers)but the trigger is the worst of all of my guns and have not seen any upgrade kits for such a common gun.
    Thanks again and I've gotten some really useful info from this site.

    To remove bolt ..remove receiver plug...remove springs and plunger.. pul bolt all the way back and pull out bolt handle then bolt will come out... just that easy.

    I've already had the springs out and back together with no problems.
    With the bolt in hand, I think I can really get after it.

    Got my 550 on my 11th birthday (47 years ago). My dad was an Air Force armorer (fighters mostly) and helped explain the intricacies of takedown/rebuild (of which there are many in the 550).

    The complicated trigger geometry just doesn't seem to lend itself to smoothing. There are no commercial "aftermarket" solutions either.

    The most exciting problem is when the floating chamber gets gummed and a case swells and gets stuck! It is a pain to clear that problem, but not impossible.

    I have the takedown instructions in one of those firearm disassembly books (Vol 5, I think) that may help. I can run a copy or try a scan if you are interested. joferranti@msn.com
