winchester model 37 red letter with loop top lever

i just bought a winchester model 37 red letter 16 gauge and the top lever is a loop instead of the solid one with checkering on the left side. i've seen them both ways now and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on as to why this is.thanks.

    Hello 7jasper2371: Welcome to the forum!! The Md 37 you have is a first year gun. The first guns delivered to the warehouse, (ready to go to dealers) was 10 Feb. 1936, these guns had the top lever made out of sheet metal folded around into a loop. (nick named "pig tail") One of the first changes made was going to a forging, which was authorized on 25 Sept. 1936. So with that said, you know as much as I do!! Also all early guns up into the late 1940's (47-48) were "Red Letter" guns, (Winchester stamped into the bottom of the receiver, then painted red.

    Somebody kick me. I watched 3 "pigtails" sell at auction for less than $200 each a few years ago. Had I known the production run was that short I would have went into debt to buy one of them.

    I also passed on 37A's in 28 and 16 gauge at a gun show, Doh!

    If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't move, pick it up. If you can't pick it up, paint it.
