RIFLE RANGE DISTANCE

I am in a gun club and we have a 100 and a 300 yard range. Is this distance typical? Does anybody know of civilian ranges of more than 300 yards. What is the longest distance? Would there be any interest in a target retrival and monitoring system for 300 plus shooting?

    600 yd and 1000 yd ranges are in existence, but not very common. Many ranges offer only 100 yds, or at most, 200 yd shooting. I doubt it on the target retreival system. The guys use steel "gong" reactive targets for a lot of this shooting, others have "pits' in which guys are safe from the rifle bullets,and move the targets up and down to score and be shot at.

    there is a private range in fincastle virginia that has target retrieval out to 300 yards, so you never have to walk out and change the targets. they have rifle 25, 50, 100, and 300. and a 15 and 25 yard pistol range.

    When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

    The range i go to by my home has targets out to 300 yards. The only target retrieval system at the range, you are wearing on your feet. There is only one range longer "500 yards" within an hours drive that i know of. So i don't think long one are all that common.

    When I lived on the other side of the state I was a member of Nashua Fish & Game (Nashua, NH). They have one of only two 600 yard ranges in the state. Every Saturday they held rifle matches on it. After people were done shooting they'd all pile into the back of a couple of pickups and go off to change their targets.

    Get in touch with Leland Dunn in Monkeytown and get him to bring you over to my range. It is 50,100,200,400,500,550,600,700, 800, 900 and 956 yards..(we thought we had 1000 yards until lasers came along).There is no 300 yard target because of a dip in the ground. Lee comes over and shoots with a couple of friends from Clayton and Eufaula on this range. I am about 100 miles from you in Ga.

    Forgot to mention, our targets are steel knockdown plates and gongs hung on chains. We paint targets every trip downrange and can see splatter thru spotting scopes. Target retrieval system is a pickup truck or 4 wheeler.

    The Albuquerque Shooting Sports Park has archery, skeet, covered and uncovered lines, and measured distance targets out to 523yds (25,50,100,150,225,523).
    Not much call for a retrieval system, too many shooters willing to walk.

    NRA Whittington Center isn't too far, and they have ranges for ANY type of shooting at almost any distance you want. No Retrieval there, either.

    Thanks for the replies. I am doing some preliminary work on a system that would place and retrieve targets, and eliminate the need for a spotting scope. The technology is available and proven. Right now it looks like the prototype will cost about $2500 to build. If I can get it to market for about $1500 would it sell?

    This system wouldn't involve a small, battery-operated, remote control 4x4 would it? They're fun to shoot, too!

    Just doing the math; spotting scopes run from $50-500, and your system costs 3X that? Maybe that's why I see so many kids at the range.

    Our club has a 600 yd rifle range, just East of Cincinnati. Most guys will shoot with a partner and either use a 'field phone' system or FRS/Motorola radios to communicate. Target puller in the butts will mark target hits with two or four inch discs that have a wooden spindle through the center...to insert spindle in the target hole.

    i dont think having a retrival system will do away with the need for spotting scopes. most shooters do maintainence on sights and loads and retreiving a target is just for putting new ones up. most shooters still like to look at their bullet hits as they happen.
    btw...you might want to look into robotics and solar power for your idea on retrival. it may do away with the need for mechanical chain things, (i/e: all targets on a 4w dolly that can be steered into place.) ever been to those old play parks where they had cars on roads with a beam down the middle and the car was guided on it with a stay bar? get old golf carts and convert them to solar!
