air plane travel

[8D][V]im concidering going to cal.this augest,fly out of tex. or oka. would like to take a shotgun and retiever with me...anybody up todate on rules and reg... thanks

    I fly all the time with guns, last week my latest trip. Took 3 .22 handguns.

    Firearms must be in a locked hard case, with ammo carried in a separate case. If carrying handguns, they must be in the locked case inside a larger suitcase. the larger case should be left UNlocked for inspection.

    Obviously, NO guns in carry on. Make sure you declare your guns at check-in. The ticket agent will have you fill out a firearms declaration card that goes with the guns inside the hard case.

    They will also have you open the action of said guns to show they are empty. I try to do this as descretely as possible and without dry-firing when you put them back in the case.

    They no longer put a firearms tag on the outside of the larger case the guns are being carried in, only on the inside.

    Lefty pretty much summed it up. I prefer not to carry ammo at all - just buy it at my destination. I did this for the first time this spring. The only thing I didn't like was walking into the Tampa airport past the sign "No Firearms Allowed". I had no problem though. The ticket counter folks were super. You will be delayed at the counter while security comes, looks at what you have, and (in my case) put checked by security tape around the case. "Firearms" was not mentioned - just that the case had been checked by them. I've seen this on baggage that probably had nothing to do with guns.

    As for the retriever, make sure he has had plenty of water. I wouldn't feed him before the trip. Don't skimp on the size of the cage. Obviously try to make the total travel time as short as possible. Don't take a trip that goes through Peoria! Ha Ha

    Try to wait until as late as possible to let go of him. In past years I have been able to check all of my baggage and keep the dog with me until baggage loading is almost complete. Maybe after 9/11 this won't be so easy.
