Remington 597 22WMR....any good?
Are they reasonably accurate? reliable?

Ive sold some of these and about everyone of them has had problems.
WE tell a customer who requests one that we dont stock them because of this.
We stand behind what we sell and if a customer has problems with a newly purchased item we return it to the factory at our expense. Since packing and shipping costs eat up what ever profit there was we feel we are better off being upfront and discouraging the sell. There are other brands that are dependable and we try to sell them.0 -
Chris, I have responded to this topic many times. I have the 597 WMR and mine has been a very reliable ,accurate gun. I recently bought an all steel magazine for a backup just in case the factory plastic one ever fails. I think that was one of the worst things about the gun (the plastic magazine). Most complaints I have heard are about feeding problems. Mine is a tack driver and feeds fine. As an alternative, you may want to look at the Ruger .22 WMR semi-auto if they are still being made. Or if you can find one, my buddy in the military brought home a CZ .22 mag from Europe and that was a fine, accurate gun. I cannot reccomend the Marlin 922 semi 22 WMR. I had one and it was not very accurate, so I sold it and got the 597. You will probably hear alot of negative feedback about the 597 on this forum. I have.

Cole has it in the head. Our store policy is exactly the same . We wont stock them either. There is a reason most if not all companies do not make a semi .22mag. They dont function worth jack sh**. If you got to have one buy the Ruger for close to $400 . 0 -
I will not keep any firearm if it is not reliable, the 597 is not reliable...

I don't have a 597 22mag but I have one in 22lr that I bought in 1998. I also bought a 10/22 at the same time. The 10/22 was dumped the same year and the 597 will stay foever, not one problem in 7yrs and thousands of rounds, can't say the same for the 10/22 thats why its gone. If I had a need for a 22mag I would buy the 597 in a heartbeat! 0 -
I purchased a 597 for my son in 2002. It has had a lot of ammo shot threw it with never a problem! its a tack driver to. I am happy i choose it for my sons first rifle. I know about the mags but, for my money the 597 22lr is the top choice in 22 semi. 0 -
I have the .22lr version, and it is a dead reliable, accurate gun. The Viper was a poor weapon that has predjudiced many against Remington 22s, but the 597 is a fine little rifle. 0 -
As a new member to Gun broker who is just starting to shoot again after a long illness, I have a few questions and soliciting opinions. I would like a 22 mag to go along with Ruger 22 convertible so I could shoot a long and short gun. I do not hunt and I just want something that's semi accurate and fun to shoot at the range.
My choices at my local shop an given my price range are:
Remington 597 (has it gotten any better in last 2 years?)
Marlin bolt action (I think 982 something) It has a wood stock and target barrel with no sights. Nice looking gun but I wonder if I will get bored cycling the bolt all the time.
Henry or Ruger lever action in 22 mag. (As an aside I had a Marlin 1894 CS 357 that I miss very much. Is the 22 mag any better with a lever as compared to a semi auto?
Any opinions to help me fill in some gaps. Btw I only have the Ruger sixgun and a Winchester 190 semi auto 22.0 -
I have three 597s:
.22LR, stainless heavy barrel with Boyd's Evolution stock and scope; bought new two years ago;
.22WMR, blued heavy barrel, changed out original stock for an Evolution, scoped. Bought used from a dealer who took it in trade from its former disgruntled owner.
.17HMR, blued standard barrel with synthetic stock, scope added. Bought new last year when BassPro had 'em on sale.
With the .22LR, from Day One I have had absolutely no problems of any kind, except with Remington bulk ammo and that's not a gun problem; the ammo is crap.
Initially I had some failure to feed issues with both magnums. Some of it I think was partly due to ineptitude on my part in loading the magazines. On another forum I saw a tip from someone who also had similar problems. His solution: load 5 or 6 rounds, not the 8 max for the magazines. Since then I have not had a single failure to feed. As I shoot targets in three round volleys, I just bought some spare magazines, burn off ammo; take a break to reload; then, shoot some more. Life could be better?
All three of mine are tack drivers. They are capable of better groups than I can consistently maintain. And mine work flawlessly. I love 'em.0
