1911 info

Is there a website where I can get info on a Colt 1911 based on its s/n ? It is an US Army issued Colt 1911, would like to get info on production date, also any info on its service record if there such records kept on individual sidearms.

  If you post the serial #, I can tell you when it was shipped. Or, you can check the Springfield Research Service website.
  
  There is no information available on the actual service use of most US military firearms, although some can be traced to a specific branch.

  Thanks for the links guys, looks like it was manufactured around 1917. Kinda cool to have a piece of history in my possesion. Looking at the proof marks, I believe it was manufactured by Singer, there is either an "S" or a "5" on the front upper left corner of the trigger guard, on the upper right front of the trigger gaurd there is an "S", much clearer than on the left side. just below the slide lock, there are three uppercase letters "FJA" anyone know what these are? Still looking through the stuff you all posted.

  The FJA stamp is the mark of Col. Frank J. Atwood, Army Inspector of Ordinance, Rochester Ordinance District from 6/15/42-3/31/46. This mark only appears on Remington Rand & Ithaca M1911A1's made during WWII. This means that your gun is a mixture of parts, at best. We would need to see photos in order to be able to tell you more.

  CSP forums has a great bunch of service 1911 collectors. A yahoo search for them will turn up "jouster".
