S&W mdl 17?

My brother in law has the .22 S&W revolver with a 6" barrel from his grandfather, a Sheriff in a bygone era. It was his carry "duty" gun!

Does anyone have information on this revolver so I can pass it on to my brother in law?

  Should that be a .32 rather than .22??
  In the "bygone era", many carried the .32 cal revolvers, but most of them had shorter barrels. Try to get the weapon in your hand so you can verify make, s/n, caliber, barrel length, top break or solid frame with swing-out cylinder etc..
  With more info. on the weapon (maybe even a picture) I'm sure someone can direct you to a site that can help.

  Never heard of any LEO carrying a .22 as a Duty PIECE.....Not enough stopping power.....Possibly He was a Deputy or Marshall and lived out in the Wild and Wooly West where He ran across Critturs like Rattlesnakes and the like, where a .22 was the cheapest way to dispatch them....That I could understand.....

  Having lived in a rural area of the south it is entirely believable that a sheriff carried a .22 pistol. In the 1930's, maybe even more recently, law enforcement officers were not well paid and could not afford the ideal law enforcment handgun. Cities and counties had very little money and it was common for the officer to provide his own gun. In the town where I live they tell of a man who had no gun when he was hired as city marshal. As he could not afford a handgun he armed himself with an axe handle.
