Which caliber?
Witch would be the better choice for short range elk and black bear, the 45-75 Winchester or the 50-95 Winchester. Consider that both would be loaded with 1 in 20 cast bullets and probably Hodgens 777 or FF black powder? Thanks

I am thinking about a new upper for an AR15. I have one in 5.56, and don't really want another. I already have a high power varmint rifle(270 weatherby). Should I go with the 6.8spc, 458 socom, 300 whisper, or something else? 0 -

any centerfire caliber in the brain pan of bambi at 300 yards is fatal. The .308 is not a bad choice but you may want to look at the 25/284 or some other wildcat. Some of these are real tack drivers.0 -
IF you are limiting yourself to head shots with a 200 yards max on your culling shots , them I would go with a 22-250, 55gr spire pt ,, very accurate plenty of power for the job you're doing , very little recoil ..also check your local game laws to see if its legal in your state 0 -
Gskyhawk is on to something, I've shot a lot of deer with a 22/250. Another option would be a .243, like the 22/250 the .243 is typically very accurate light on recoil and fun to shoot at the range. Another good one is the .257 Roberts. Can't go wrong with accurate and light recoiling rifles, the more you shoot them the better you get and the better you get the more you enjoy shooting them.[;)] 0 -
my vote would go for the 22-250, but they are illegal to use for deer in VA. so if those are illegal where you live, i would go with the 6mm remington. it shoots a little flatter than the 243. i like the 25-06 myself, but i would say it would do more damage than you are looking for, but dead is dead no matter how little of its head is left.

Looks like I'm in the minority suggesting the 308. Yes the smaller calibers would work, but what if you want to use this for something other than culling your heard? The 308 would give you plenty of power for just about anything, and it is a cheap round to shoot with so much surplus ammo out there. 0 -
It is illegal here to hunt big game with anything in the 22 class. This is why I did not choose the .223 I am going to be doing some reloading for this round and was also thinking of the 6mm PPC.
I only got one response for barrel makers, and I won't be going with Bullberry. I have been told you either get a really good barrel or a real bad one. If you recieve the latter, they don't want to do anything to fix it. I would rather go with someone with a better track record
