Silencer
Are silencers legal. I need to control some vermin but I do not want to create noise.

Different states have different regs as well as the BATF requires a permit read "$$$$" . You don't say what kind of vermin but if they are small try a 22 rifle with CCI 22long CB CAPS they are as quiet as an air rifle. 0 -
Suppressors start in the $200-300 range; the tax stamp is another $200. Plus, your gun may need a threaded barrel or an adaptor. And, if it is a semi-auto, it may not function properly without tuning.
Hmmm, Perry Shooter's recommendation is starting to sound pretty good.

Ask your local Sherriff's Dept, the Sherriff would have to sign off on the BATFE form4 to transfer to you.
Might as well get your answer from the horses mouth per say.
The 22 long rifle are the most popular and the quitest of the bunch.
AAC, AWC and GemTech are the biggies in the suppressor world.

Depending on the vermin, you may want to consider air rifles in 20 or 22 caliber. I use these on vermin in orchards and they do the job quite well. 0 -
I sell Lauer 22 silencers for Walther P22's for $175 (+$200 Tax). They are very quite, and work great for vermin. Talk to your local CLEO and see if they will sign off on your Form 4. Some people on this board don't like class 3 items and constantly interject their dislike for them. I don't quite understand why they waste their time discussing things they don't like. I don't care for muzzleloaders, so usually don't post on those threads, it just makes sense to me. If you want a silencer, then get one, they are fun.

I have used about a foot and a half of swimming pool "noodle" over the barrel of a Ruger 10/22 for fire supression on dry grass. It has the unwanted byproduct of noise reduction. I have stopped usuing it for that reason. I now wet the grass. 0 -

Point is, even improvised doodads like this are highly illegal, and could land you in nasty trouble if you are caught.
Stick with the low-power .22 ammo, and with a good shot, you'll be fine for critters under 10 pounds.0 -
I believe a 22 birdshot is by far the safest for backyard pest control. The shot doesn't carry far at all and you can just about forget about riccochet's. As far as the noise goes, shoot and put the gun away. pick up the "vermin" later. One shot is hard to tell where it came from.Most people would think maybe a firecracker? Just my opinion...........

You can make a one-shot silencer with a 2 liter bottle and some duct tape, make it count!

Speer Plastic .45 bullets, either with just the primer or a bit of Bullseye (like 1/2 of a grain) can do amazing things, like take rabbits in the back yard, with head shots. A friend of mine has taken a couple of them with paraffin bullets and primers, too, albeit at very close range (ie, 5 ft or so). 0
