Can someone tell me what barrel(s) will work?
Just bought this http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?item=33720991 commercial M98 action and I am now looking for a barrel. Will this action accept any Model 98 Mauser barrel or is it different? How about other brands, like Winchester, Remington, etc. Do any other rifles use barrels with the same thread size and pitch? Thanks.

According to this link, http://www.mausercentral.com/rings.htm you have a standard "Large Ring" action. That will accept any commercial barrel specifically made for the 98 action.
The 98 Barrel is threaded 1.100 O.D., 12 Threads Per Inch. Both Remington and Winchester Barrels shown in my reference have a smaller shank diameter. The only way they could be made to work in a 98 action is to cut them down, and turn a new shank dia., then thread 12 T.P.I.

What you have bought is the classic Mark X mauser 98 action. Just about any barrel that is described as being threaded for the large ring Mauser 98 or 1.1"dia x.625" x 12tpi, should work fine. No you can't use barrels made for other rifles, Win & Rem & Ruger all use a different set of dimensions. This was prbably self defence on their part to keep folks from buying their barrels and sticking them on some old rusty nasty wornout action. Still the M98 has more barrels made by more manufacturers in more after market variations then anyother action ever made. So all you have to do is decide what caliber, contour and quality that you want in a barrel for your project. My friends and I spend many a hour each year over many pitchers of beer deciding just that. Have fun..... 0 -
Saxon,...thread shank dia., as well as length, thread per inch, pitch of thread, etc must match as you probably know. The Mauser (large ring) has one of the larger shanks in dia. from what I am told. Should that be the case with your 98 action,..then the barrels you can choose from will need to either be blanks, or used/new barrels with the shank pre-cut to fit a 98 action. If it has been cut down further to be used on a remchesterugerako action, then that shank will have to be cut off and that results in major length loss. HTH

Ummm, don't worry about getting a pre-threaded barrel, purchase a blank and let your gunsmith cut the threads to match your receiver while he's cutting the chamber.
If you have a decent smith, one of the first things he will do is cut the shank to be concentric with the bore. This step will insure that the threads end up being concentric.......
Remember "streight, square and parallel" to the firing pin for maximum accuracy.
Second best way is to purchase a Lother-Walther "long chambered, prethreaded" barrel (they have the '98 pre-mades). These are fitted by cutting the required amount off the shank and breach faces to set the headspace & receiver crush.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Looking to save some $$$ by bagging a used barrel. I really don't want to have $350-$500 invested in the barrel. This isn't a match rifle. 0 -
Want a 7.92x57 barrel? I pulled one off a Sauer 98 military receiver a couple years back, and will give it to you if you want it.

I suggest you go look at the barrels that www.midwayusa.com has to offer that are already chambered and threaded for Mausers. Their barrels are all around $100.

Hey Saxson, I know a number of folks who have have good results with the midway barrel and an equal number who have had really bad results. Wilson makes some good quality but reasonably priced barrels. There is a guy due back from Iraq soon, who sells them on the auction site. He usually gets like $125 for a 24" #2 or #3 contour and has a decent selection of calibers. His name is Brian Perazone and you could do worse then to wait till he sets his online shop back up. Just do a search for "Mauser barrel" and if he is back online you should get plenty of hits. With a double set trigger action like the one you've bought, I would have thought that you'd be looking for a cartridge like the 220swift, 25-06, 6.5-06, 270win or the like, so that the second trigger would come into it's own. 0 -
Tailgunner1954 I sure appreciate your kind offer but I think I want a sporter barrel rather than the stepped military style.
I'm hoping to find one that doesn't need to be blued because the action is ready to go and I am trying to avoid doing any bluing on this project. One of the reasons I'm looking at used tubes instead of a new one that comes "in the white."0
