I would like to know 7mm vrs 308 they both seem to be good cal but I heard that the 308 is as good as 7mm rem mag for diss. does anyone have a prefrance there is alot of differance in the price of ammo 7rem mm is high

Some people shouldn't be shooting past 50yd, while others are capable to 300 and a rare few have the equipment, skill and experance to hunt at ranges in excess of 1000yd. Where do you fit into the line up?
How sensitive are you to recoil?
The answers to the above questions will get you a much better answer to your questions.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

Im a farley good shot i can hit at 3-4-5 hundred yards if I had to i could probly hit at a 1000 i dont reload my own my question could i get a 1000 yards from a 308 ammo is cheaper in 308 than 7 rem mag 0 -
maybe you should decide what your target is going to be before you worry about a cal. by the way is ( farly good shot ) A description of how far you can shoot or how fair you can shoot? if its the latter dont be shooting at 500 to a 1000 yds !!!

Per your original post. The 7mm Rem Mag is more powerful than a .308. .308 Ammunition is much less expensive than 7mm Rem Mag. .308 is used all the time to shoot at 1000 yds. In 1968 the 7mm Rem mag won at Camp Perry.
With good bullet choice and good shot placement(you must practice) both rifles are good out to 400 yds as the extreme for hunting. Both rifles will need to be compensated for drop between 300-400 yds. The .308 will push a 150 gr. bullet to 2800 fps. The 7mm Rem mag will push it to 3000.
I shoot a .308 for target. I don't own a 7mm Rem mag anymore because it kicks too much for what little gain is achieved.
Bottom line: Both are good enough for any non-dangerous game on this continent if you stay within your limits. I wouldn't go after dangerous game with either.
The .308 is used extensively for target/competition and the 7mm Rem Mag is not.

yes that is what I needed to know if a 308 will kill a deer 3-4-5-hundred yards and ammo is cheeper its a better choise 0 -
With a good autorifle, like the BAR, and solid bronze bullets in 308, I'd be considerably more confident in elephant country (by myself) than I'd be with any sort of bolt action or double rifle. Elephant country is lion, poacher and terrorist country. The trouble is, few African nations allow autorifles. I'd definitely prefer such a 308 auto, with a premium bullet, like the Barnes "x" solid copper hp, over any bolt action, in bear country, 0 -
a 308 or the 7mm's will have very little trouble downing a deer at 500yds assuming correct shot placement and bullet construction. Getting your bullet in the boiler room is far more important than your choice between the aforementioned calibers. Just about ANY modern centerfire of 6mm and up, with a good bullet and A COMPETENT RIFLEMEN, can more than dirt nap a deer out to 500yds. You are the weak link in the chain,..the rifle and it's caliber are up to the task.
most folks need larger calibers to make up for their poorly placed shots and lack of practice during the year. Once you get comfortable with your rig,..you can acheive spectacular results with most any centerfire (non-lever gun caliber).
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

The 308 is unlikely to reliably expand a softpoint in flesh at 500 yds. You need a remaining velocity of 1800 fps to get such expansion, and that's going to be very tough to assure at such a distance. REalistically, the game is hit at 300m and less, and the 308 suffices just fine for that. It's main advantage is the good hitting possible by somebody who fires thousands of rds of 16c per shot 308 milsurp practice ammo, from realistic firing positions, as vs somebody who only fires 1/4 as much, because his caliber ammo costs 4x as much. 0 -
Just curious, but why would you ever have to shoot a deer at 500 yards? That said, the cartridge with the flatter trajectory is always more desireable for long range work. If I were planning on making 500 yard shots, I would be using a cartridge designed for it such as the 7mm STW or .300 Rem ultra mag. However, I have found that it is no real task to get closer than 300 yards with deer, so I continue to use my .25-06.
