DSA SA58 Which Reciever is Best? & Gas System?
Howdy Gentlemen..
About to make one of those lifetime purchases...the Wife is looking over my shoulder..the comerades too...okay...I have investigated this Rifle fairly well..two questions remaian fairly obscure..Any help I can get in answering these would be greatly appreciated..thanks in advance..
1.)DSA offers Type I , II, or III recievers (Uppers) on the FAL (SA 58 for the record..better than the STG right?) so which one..?? the only real discrepancy noted by DSA is "Stiffness" notet specifically as a feature of the Type III reciever which is also the heaviest..this seems "intuitive" to me..and would be my 1st choice..but...uhhh..most of the Rifles come with Type I so maybe not..anybody Know?
2.)So-Called "Short Gas System" V. Normal set-up: the differance being in length of fore-end grip and gas tube inside same..on the most basic level..after that...I am at a loss..Power..etc..is there a difference???? does the shortened gas tube make a differance in power or performance for the rifle?? I prefer the feel of the Carbin and the balance of the 16.25" with the shortened grip set-up..but if the performance is lessened..then...I will go with the other..
Anyway..any info on these questions is greatly appreciated..

The difference between the I II III types of receivers is all in what they refer to as lightening cuts. The type I receiver is, I believe, the correct one historicly for the STG58 rifle kits. The fact that you are talking about buying a DSA throws history out and makes it all your choice. Still when I built my L1A1 I went with the type I while two of my friends built their STG kits on Imbel type III. The bottom line is that they all work. As far a gas system and barrel length goes, well it all depends on how you see yourself using this purchase. Feral pigs and other varmints are common uses for these rifles, for most other hunting they are just to bulky and heavy. Still if it is going to be any sort of working rifle rather then a toy you should really consider going with a longer barrel setup for the added velosity. If you are in law enforcement and may carry it on duty then that is another rational all together. It is all muzzel velosity vs compact carry and a 16.5" barrel isn't going to generate alot of oomph in the .308 cartridge. 0 -
I have an ORF FAL carbine with Imbel Receiver. It has a 16.25" barrel. It's been awhile since I looked at caliber velocity charts but I believe you are only loosing 200fps at the muzzle by going to a 16" barrel. My barrel is actually only 14" long but has 2.25 more inches of brake.
I belive my carbine has the fulsize gas system. I hear the short gas system may be a little more reliable for a carbine but don't know for sure. I 've been shoting my FAL at 200yds these last couple of weeks and when I do my part, my best 5 shot group so far, has been 1.75".
