2 3/4" compared to 3" magnums

After buying several boxes of 12 gauge 3" magnums in 00 buck, I noticed a comparison chart on the side of the box that detailed the velocity of a few different shells. According to the manufacturer, the velocity of the 2 3/4" shells of the same shot is higher than that of the 3" magnum. When comparing the actual shells to each other, there doesn't seem to be any difference in the size of the brass, but rather just an increase in the quantity of pellets. It was my impression that magnums were supposed to be more powerful than 2 3/4" shells.

    Yeah alot of 3 inchers have lower velocity than the 2 3/4 shells. From what I have gathered due to experience and asking about, a 3 inch mag shell will only give you a killing range extending 5-10 yards farther than a 2 3/4. I have a browning belgium 12ga mag and I only use 2 3/4 in it after my experiences with 3 inchers. For waterfowl the extended range may be usefull but for pheasants and other upland game a 2 3/4 is more than enough.

    Amen to that 2-3/4 thought Wehrmacht - and with lots of folks getting all lathered up over 3-1/2" guns, there are some pretty good buys out there on lighter shotguns. I just don't like the pounding and see little to be gained. Just my thoughts. Tim

    More pellets. Not faster.

    I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

    I'll second the waterfowl angle. I have been side by side with my youngest in a blind, we both shoot similarly. More than once in the last few years, we will both come up and fire at the same ducks and he will drop one when I won't. I swapped with him last year, he has the famous low price mossberg 3 1/2, and sure enough, I could knock a few down when he could not. With Geese it was even more pronounced.....but having said that, my bones are too old to pound like that....I'll wait for the 2 3/4 inch shot.

    how many holes in a target does it take to put it down?

    the difference in a 2.75/3/3.5 at 60 feet is not worth chatting. if we are shooting 80/90 yards a different story.

    most seem to want the biggest shell available.

    take a gun/load that you can shoot with out flinching.

    one does not need 00 buck for defense. take 1 ounce of 6/8's, shoot a gallon milk jug at 60 feet.

    just me, but a twelve guage is the ulimate weapon thirty yards or less.
