Smith and Wesson Model 17

Does anyone know of a source for Model 17 serial numbers/production dates?

Are any of the designations (17-2, 17-3, 17-4, etc) more valuable, less reliable, etc., etc.?

    Nothing on line that I'm aware of. Problem with the 17 serial numbers is that they WEREN'T serial numbered as a specific model, i.e. there mixed in with all the rest of the K frames. Generally you can figure out what year they were made. "BUT" not specific production data, for a given year etc.

    Don't know about the 8 in front of the K but my 17-2 is K562XXX. It was bought new around 1960.

    According to The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson Serial number K406XX was manufactured in 1946.There should not be any model number stamped on the crane, the gun is a Pre Model 17.[:)]
