Colt Pre-Woodsman 4.5 inch
I just picked up a Pre-woodsman with serial #440XX with a 4.5 inch barrel. Rear sight is adjustable and front sight is fixed. I can't find a description in the blue book that matches. Am I correct in describing this gun as a pre-war sport model? It has well worn wood grips and a two-line magazine and two-line patent legend on the barrel. Any information will help. Thanks in advance.

According to my references the serial number is correct for a "Pre-Woodsman", made in 1925. The barrel length is wrong though. The 4 1/2 inch barrel wasn't introduced until the 1930's.
My 2?, per your description, the pistol isn't original. If you could get a letter from Colt showing that they reworked/rebarreled the pistol to it's present configuration, it would be a plus as far as it's collectors value is concerned.
