ar15 pistol Stock legal?

the ATF says you cannot have more than two on a semi-auto ar15 pistol.
a barrel shroud, threaded barrel, detachable magazine, weigh over 50 ounces.. CAN YOU PUT A STOCK ON A PISTOL? Where does it state you cannot have a stock on an AR15 pistol? Thanks..

    first, the AW ban has expired so you can have a shroud, threaded muzzle, and weigh over 50 ounces... unless you have state laws which differ.

    Secondly you can put a buttstock on a pistol but it then becomes a short barreled rifle (SBR) and you need to have ATF approval first... that means paying $200 tax, getting fingerprints and LE signature, etc.

    Thanks. I just found it on line..The barrel must be over 16inches to have a stock..

    Well what you are stating in the first part is the FEDERAL 1994 Assualt Weapons Ban which is no longer in effect as it ended in Sep of 2004. You may still have state laws banning certian things. There is no longer a FEDERAL law aginst weight or number of parts (flash hider, mags, bayonet lugs, ect) on DOMESTIC firearms. If you look at the ATF definitions as to what makes each firearm what it is (rifle, shotgun, pistol, ect) you will see that it is NOT LEGAL to put a stock on a pistol. Basicaly ATF defines a pistol as having a BBL less then 16", a SINGLE downward grip, and no stock. That is why if you are not allowed to put a front pistol grip on it either, if you do this it is no longer a pistol by definition. If you were to put the front pistol grip on it would become and Any Other Weapon (AOW). Without going through the proper paper work it is illegal to have an AOW. Same theory goes for the stock. If you were to put a stock on it, it is no longer pistol by definition but becomes a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR). Again without having the proper paper work it is illegal to have a SBR. Hope this helps, I know it was long but it is not a simple yes or no. Basicaly it is no but with the proper paperwork and living in the right states almost anything is possable.[:D][:D][:D]

    I still believe you cannot have more than two on a pistol. A rifle yes no problem..but a pistol is concealable. You would have to remove the tube, and make it single action to be legal. Cock it back each time.That is why the ar15 pistols have no barrel shrouds. They just have a flashider and removable magazine. PlEASE FORWARD NEW INFO. ON THIS. I would love to have a barrel shroud bayonet lug and flashider on my pistol.

I have one of the uppers on backorder right now, I already had a pistol lower. My buddy has his, make sure you wear ear plugs, way loud with a huge flash [:D].

    Ted, "I still believe..." doesn't cut it.

    Vicg1 gave you an accurate answer to your question. If you want to debate good advice that you have been given, then you need to justify it by quoting the page/section of ATF P5300.4 or the Code of Federal Regulations. If you don't want to do that.....then do whatever you want with your gun, but be prepared to accept the consequences.

    There's another element to this. Once you put a stock on the receiver it's a long gun and can never again legally be convereted to a pistol. An AR pistol receiver must never have had a stock attached to it.

    That is not correct Chappsyny. It is always illegal to make a RIFLE into a PISTOL, but not the oppsit. If the reciver was transferd as a "reciver only" or as a Pistol you can make it into a pistol or a rifle and back anytime you want sine it is always consided a Pistol since it was transfered as such. On the "reciver only" you would have to prove it was made into a pistol before a rifle it you were ever questioned about it. I am not sure if you have to do extra paperwork for the "reciver only" before putting the pistol stuff on it, as mine was tranfered as a Pistol reciver. If you ever did a transfer of the reciver or complete gun as a rifle on paper then yes it would be illegal to make it back into a pistol. It is the same as the Carbine kits for the most of the semi auto pistols, once you put the carbine kit on it you dont have to leave it that way. If you were to buy the whole carbine set up and it was transfered as a rifle (that is what it would be) then it would be illegal to put a pistol slide on that reciver.
