1897 Winchester question; Why does the hammer come
Forward when I cycle the action "sometimes"?? Gun is loaded with rounds in the mag. ???

As Duckhunter said, possibly either the sear, hammer or trigger is worn, or the sear spring is weak or broken, thus the gun won't reliably stay cocked.
There is no disconnector to hold the hammer back when the trigger is pressed, so it's not your disconnector! BTW, if you're touching the trigger on a Model 97 Winchester (or an Ithaca M37, for that matter), as you cycle the action, you'll likely see the hammer fall as the action locks. If your sear spring is weak, a very light touch on the trigger may cause the hammer to fall (I had a Model 93 Winchester - the predecessor to the M97 - with a sear spring made from a hacksaw blade. I nailed a pigeon with it once because I was b-a-r-e-l-y touching the trigger as I pumped the action while tracking the bird).

these are made w/o a disconnect, (same as m-12 win & ithaca 37). hold the trigger back while you pump the action and the gun will fire as soon as the bolt is locked (see the movie 'the wild bunch'). that said, you have either a bad hammer or sear (or both) or possibly a loose sear spring screw (or bad sear spring). 0 -
Yes I understand the word "Slamfire" No I am not touching the trigger. Sometimes the hammer stays Cocked and sometimes not. 0 -
Time to get it fixed. You wore it out. My uncles almost killed my grandma with a 97 that did the same thing. Easy to fix/rebuild those shotguns. 0
