Colt Factory Stolen Gun Records?

I'm thinking about trading for an early 1870s Colt that I know they have factory records for that type. The piece has been in the same hands for a number of years. Considering that a gun passes thru many hands between new and now, possibly stolen once or twice. If I applied for a Colt letter, does anyone know if Colt could tell if it had been reported stolen? Any constructive thoughts and/or opinion will be appreciated.

  As with any maufacturer, Colt needed records of production, shipping, and reworking. There is no profit in keeping records of stolen revolvers. I really doubt if they would know or care.

  If you're concerned that it may have been stolen call your local PD and ask them if they would run a trace on the serial number. If nothing comes up in the NCIC system then you're all set.

  I don't compeltely understand your question.
  
  Are you saying you suspect this firearm has been stolen? Is the question: "If a factory authentication letter is requested, will Colt recognize the firearm as stolen and report it to authorities?"
  
  If you have knowledge or reason to suspect that it has been stolen, don't touch it.
