wonder-rod vs light bulb in safe
My 'wonder rod' no longer works. I don't know when it quit, I just noticed something was 'different' one day after opening the safe. It no longer warms up...tapped, jiggled, rapped, etc.... it's a goner. I have heard a few folks say that a 60 watt bulb will do just as well. If so, I will go that way.....I could use the light with my old eyes. Any opinions ?

No, there are several reasons why that is not a good idea.
A Wonder Rod or Goldenrod will not get as hot. They won't burn your hand, scorch your stock, or possibly start a fire. They use less electricity. They won't break if you bump them. They distribute heat over a wider area for better protection from high humidity.

i know someone who has 250,000.00 worth of guns protected by a 60 watt lightbulb and it has been that way for over 20 years. it works fine. just dont let the bulb touch any gun stocks or fuzz on the safe liner. [;)] 0 -

Thanks for info from both sides....you guys always post 'good replies'....they may be controversial, but you post a good stand.
I know what the temps inside were while the goldernrod was working. I recorded that when I installed it out of curiosity. (it was only 1.5 degrees F mid-level in the back over the rod, and only 0.4 degrees F near the door at the same height.
NO DOUBT the rod gives more uniform climate control, so I may go back to that proven operation. I was going to put in some lighting anyway, so I think I will try a couple of 'nite-lite' bulbs or two 15 watts 1/3 the way from each rear corner, whatever gets me near the goldenrod managed temps without going over. I will put them in a wire cage to protect them as much as possible, and keep 6 inches away from anything. If it works out badly, I will post right away ....If it works out well, it will be years before I really know.

i know someone who ran out of space in his safe so he stuck a lamp wit ha 60watt in his closet. it keeps things nice and warm and never had moisture problems ever. most gun cabinets use low watt 40's. you dont need much, the thoery is it just needs something to evaporate the moisture. 40's work too. i have 40's guarding my hi standards with no problems to date. 0 -

When I was stationed in the Far East, we had light sockets in our closet about 18" from the floor with a wire screen over them. This was to keep our clothes from mildewing.
I suppose a small heating pad would work just as well in a safe.0
