H&R TOPPER MODEL 88

I also have a h&r topper model 88 with a 32 inch barrel.can anyone tell me when did they start making them,and what year did they stop.thanks again, bridgebuilder41

  "New" production of Topper started 1946. From the book:
  Topper - A single shot, break open shotgun, chambered for various gauges with various barrel lengths, chokes. Blued, with a hardwood stock. Introduced in 1946. Model 088 - An external hammer single shot, break open shotgun chambered for all gauges with various barrel lengths, chokes and automatic ejector. Blued, with case colored frame and hardwood stock.(no date given)

  the use of the name 'topper' started in 1942 when H&R introduced the model 48. the model 48 was an improvement of their earlier model 1908 1909-1931 and the the model 8 standard 1931-1941 (the model 48 has a self adjusting barrel lock the earlier models do not). this single barrel shotgun went through many changes and variations until 1982 when the final model was introduced. the model 088 was manufactured between 1982-1986. after new england firearms aquired the h&r name the model 88 was continued and is being manufactured today (by marlin) as the partner.
