duct tape removal?

good afternoon any/all,

i just found an old winchester single shot .22.

someone in the past had lost the takedown screw, they used duct tape to keep things together.

any ideas how to remove the sticky without harming the wood/barrel?

    Try Goo Gone by Magic American Corp. They claim it will remove almost any sticky substances from almost any surface (including wood and metal). They specifically list duct tape as one of the things it will remove. Here's a link:

    Works for just about anything else.

    I've used goo-gone with great success, tho never on a gun. I would go easy on the wood.

    When I was rebuilding wrecks I used goo-gone to remove masking tape that had been either on too long or had been wet. Works like a charm.

    Lighter fluid will do the trick although I dont know how it will affect the wood finish. I used it to remove some left over duct tape adhesive off my truck when the back glass busted and I had to cover it up for the trip home. It didn't cause any harm to the clear coat.

    I had the same problem from a used stock I bought. The guy had put duck tape on the recoil pad when he stripped the old finish and sold it to me with the duck tape still on it. When I got it I was going to send it back to him but my wife heard my little vent and brought me a bottle of baby oil and siad it would remove the glue on the recoil pad. After I at first laughed at her I decided to give it a try just to be able to say I told you so. Dang, it worked like a charm. In 5 minutes it had all the glue off and put a good shine on the pad too.

    Here's another vote for wd-40. Maybe I just like the smell, but it's been the best and cheapest I've found.

    Goo Gone will work, but try this first to save the wood finish- chill it in the fridge for a while then try to peel off the tape. Cold makes the glue come off without making a mess.
