Colt SA Open Top Revolver
I am trading for this revolver in about 25% condition, the model with Navy size grip. Does anyone know whether Colt has records on this model? How can I find out? I think it would be worth a letter if they have any info on record. Thanks for info, comments, opinions, whatever!

"the model with Navy size grip"......can you be more specific as to what model this is? Is it an 1851 or 1861 Navy Revolver.
As to whether or not Colt has any records on your revolver...maybe yes, and maybe no. In 1864, the Colt factory and adjacent offices burned to the the ground. Many of the records were saved, but many were also lost.

The "Navy-size grip" would describe about every Colt single action revolver after the Model 1851 Navy, since that frame shape was used thereafter, including on the famous Model P.
An "open top" may describe a Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top .44 Frontier revolver. There wre two sizes of grip frames, an Army and a Navy. This may be what the poster means.
A letter on one of these is $300 as I recall, but could add more than that to the value if it turns out to be original.0 -
It is the 1872 open top, .44RF revolver. They were made with two types of grips, most had the same type of grip as the 1860 Army, few had the grip type of the 1851 Navy. The 1860 Army grip is longer and a bit thinner than that of the 1851 Navy. I appreciate all interest and comments but I'm wondering if Colt has a website that I can find out how to apply for a letter. I also know that the latest Colt letter charges vary with the type of gun and to whom it was shipped. In other words if your gun would have a letter thatthat it was shipped to a famous historical figure, the charge for the letter would be more, maybe a lot more. I have owned both types of 1872 open tops but this is the only one I have considered getting a letter for. 0 -

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the .PDF file. It says the archive letter for an 1872 Open Top Revolver is $200.00 plus "premium pricing" if the gun has special features such as engraving, inlays, etc.0 -
