Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Model PI 9601 ?

I'm trying to identify a gun I purchased before it arrives in my hands. I know it is stainless steel, it has what appears to be Novak sights, and an ambi-safety. It bears a serial number of NM831xx and the Customer Service lady at SA indicated it was a "Custom Build" in 9/89 with a model number of PI 9601, but that's all she could tell me.

Any ideas what I'm getting?

  I don't know anything specific about the PI 9601 model. I did buy a new Springfield in 87, ( blued, standard 1911A1 configuration ) with a NM prefix to the ( 4 ) diget serial number. I was later informed that NM stood for "New Model". Don't believe that Springfield had any pistols in their line during that time period, made of Stainless. I would recheck with the customer service rep at Springfield, as I believe if the pistol is stainless, it would have a later build date.

  I bought a springfield 1911-a1-45, stainless steel handgun in 1991. It came in a blue case.It had packmeyer wrap around grips, beveled mgazine well and adjustable sights. Serial # is nm131***. It is now highly customised and a great shooter!
