Help needed indentifying a military rifle
An old military rifle just landed in my lap and I'm not too familiar with these. I was hoping someone could help me out!
It is relativly short the overall length is just over 39" it has a "straight pull bolt action" and is marked BUDAPEST M95 the serial# is 3855 E There are really no other markings that I can see. It has a bayonet lug and on the left side of the barrel is a screw in pin with a ball machined on the end about 2 1/2" long. I'm thinking the pin could be for the french to attach their white flag to!! Any help would be appreciated.

It's a Steyer Model 1895 carbine, a shortened version of the 1895 long rifle. It probably shoots 8x56 caliber ammo. You can buy the ammo at gun shows for about $2.50/box of 10. It (the ammo)will probably be marked with Austrian headstamps dated 1938 and lots of it has the German swastica (Spelling uncertain?). I think one ammo company is now making a run of it with boxer primers and modern cases. The carbine was used by Austria and Hungary, yours is the Hungarian version. The rod at the end of the barrel is for stacking the guns upright in a short of teepee shape. It helped keep them from falling over. The M1895 is a fun gun to shoot. VERY loud with a lot of muzzle flash. Be sure to clean the barrel right after shooting as the surplus ammo is very corrosive. That's about all I know but do a search looking for info on a Steyer Model 1895 carbine and I'm sure you'll find lots. I'd value the gun at about $150 in good condition. I think you have a Steyr-Mannlicher M95 carbine in probably 8x56R. If you look at WWW.surplusrifle.com you can get a lot of info. 0 -
M-95 Austria-Hungerian(sp) Cavelary Carbine
It may be in 8x50R OR 8x56R (the 8x56R normaly has a S on the rear receiver ring however). You need the origional clips (they're the same for both cartridges), unless you intend to use it as a single shot only. The rod with ball is for field stacking the rifle (3 rifles hooked together to form a tripod).
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0
