Winchester Model 1911 / 11 SL
I am considering purchasing two Winchester shotguns, model 1911 and a model 11. Both are in working condition. I have several questions about these guns based upon a previous discussion page I found. Can these gun shoot modern 2 3/4" shotgun shells? Are there some limitations or loads that would work better? The other article mentioned that there is a bushing that wears out causing this gun to kick a lot. Is this bushing something that is expensive or difficult to replace? If replaced will the gun shoot better? Is the 1911 and 11 the same? Is one more collectible or shootable? I would like to be able to use this gun in the field. Is that too much to ask of this old gun or is it just obsolete at this point?

Hello Paralympian2: Well first of the Md 1911 became the Md 11. As far as the "buffers" go you have a barrel buffer and a bolt buffer. No parts aren't easy to come buy. When you do find them they can be expensive. As far as loads go the standard load when these were made was the 12 ga. 2 3/4in 1 1/4 oz of lead with 3&3/4's dram eq.
There was a reason Winchester only made about 84,000 of these, it wasn't a good design. In the first couple of years there were over 50 design changes.
There are much better choices I would make before buying a Md 1911/11 for regular hunting. Like an old Browning A-5 for one.
This gun picked up the nick name the "Widow Maker" for a reason. Yes I do have one, but it's just a "wall hanger", and a conversation piece!

I have 2 of these guns one for parts,i dont shoot it much anymore and agree with only winchesters parts are hard to get and not a good design.get a A5 or remington mod.11 or savage 720 very same design only better built and most parts will fit.tks hedge0
