I HAVE A RIFLE MARKED L ETIENNE Mle M16. IT HAS A CHROME BOLT' #628 IS STAMPED IN A STRAIGHT STOCK ' HAS A MANNLICKER STOCK TO END OF BARREL 'ALSO HAS BM ON BOLT IN A OVAL SHAPE .THE RIFLE LOOKS LIKE A NEW RIFLE ITS IT PERFECT SHAPE NO NICKS IN WOOD. BLUEING IS LIKE NEW . SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT IT IS??? AND WHAT CALIBER IT COULD BE ?? IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS A HUNTING RIFLE. THANKS POPPY@IJ.NET

From your description of the markings, it appears that you have a French Military Rifle, ( Berthier ) that was made during the First World War. They were chambered for the French Military Cartridge that was then in use, 8 x 51mmR ( Lebel ).
It's not clear if yours has been a sporterized rifle, or it's a Artillery Musketoon. Post some pictures so we could help you with it.

Rufe-Snow; Can't be a Military....The man says its a Mannlicher Stock to the end of the barrel.......Mannlicher Stock would'nt leave any Room for a Bayonet Lug and or Cleaning Rod.....Hence my short remark for a Photo....Lets make sure the POSTER has made an accurate discription.....Best...........

guys there is a rifle on {elsewhere} item # 6743941 my bolt is all silver and turned down
and in like new condition all bluing is there' and stock is like it came out of the factory

Kindly refer to my first post as far as caliber is concerned. As far as the bolt being bent down, that was one of the characteristics of the Artillery Musketoons, that I also mentioned in my previous post. Without pictures we can't be sure if your rifle has been sporterized or not?0
