44 special too much?
Does anyone feel that a 3inch 629 Smith loaded with 44 specials is too much for my everyday ccw? I have heard comments like that is too much for up close or inside a car or house. I always thought that 45acp was more than 44 special.

Personally, I find the bulk of any .44 too great for a CCW. But, if that doesn't bother you, the .44 Special is relative mild (but effective) for your purpose.

Good choice of ammo, pretty bulky gun to use though. Might look into a Taurus or Charter Arms revolver in the same caliber. I have a 3" barreled old-school Charter Arms Bulldog and it only weighs something like 19oz. Major cannon though[8D]

In standard factory loadings, they're similar in muzzle velocity and muzzle energy. .44Spl. is a great round. I have a 6" barrel 629 that I regularly load .44Spl.'s in just because they're more comfortable to shoot for me than .44Mag.'s I don't personally have a concealed carry permit (I live in Los Angeles county area of the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia, where it's nearly impossible to get one unless you're a friend or relative of the county commisar, er sheriff). I think the short barrel version of the 629 loaded with .44Spl. would be a fine carry weapon. 0 -
the .45acp and .44spl are very close ballistically.The 629 is a hoss to carry concealed though.The Charter Arms Bulldog is a small revolver to pack what it does,the Taurus 445 is alittle bit larger and heavier but they also offer a Titanium model.Both come with 2" barrels so they will obviously conceal better than a 3" with out giving up much in velocity,The Taurus comes with a ported barrel though where the Charter Arms does not..Of the 2 I personally would choose the Taurus over the Charter Arms because I think quality is better from that company but either will work.The .44spl is great for CCW even though you only get 5 shots they will count for 10. 0 -

Thank you, I am a taurus fan as well. I used to carry a 85 2 inch. I just loved my 4 inch 629 so much I had to have a 3 inch.0 -
What's 10 more ounces and 1 more inch? (40oz/3" for the 629 as compared to 30oz/2" for the Taurus). I think I'd rather carry the S&W and have 6 shots and the option to use .44Mag. 0 -

10 ounces doesnt sound like much but it is 2/3 of a pound and it adds up if you have to carry it around in a front pocket all day long! The extra inch might make the difference between ability to pocket carry and not.
I don't think .44 special is "too much" but I don't think it gives you any real advantage over .357 mag. It probably is better than .38 +P, though.
I *do* think .44 mag is "too much" for routine carry only in the sense that you're going to get the negatives of extra bulk, weight, recoil, and cost, for no proven advantage in stopping ability. If you think you might need the same gun to shoot things bigger than people, it would make sense, though.
Edit: Another potential disadvantage is that if you are walking around with a particularly "offensive" gun (of which a .44 magnum might qualify) an obnoxious prosecutor could try and make it an issue should you ever have to shoot anyone with it. They'll try to paint you as a lunatic who thinks he's "Dirty Harry". It just doesn't look good. And god forbid (as CTRMASS says below) that you ever hit someone or something you arent intending to with that cannon. . .big trouble liability wise!0 -
I think .44 mag is way to much for everyday carry for all the reasons beantownshootah said plus if the day should ever come that you have to shoot someone with your carry gun the bullet might go tearing through them and still have enough energy to kill somebody else.A .44special I dont think would do that with most velocities falling into the 800-1000 fps range. 0 -
Jamn, I have a Trail Boss (S&W 629-4,3" magnaported) 44 spl's are just fine! But if you practice with 44 spl's you should shoot some magnums once in a while or you will not be able to load 44 mag into the chamber after shooting alot of 44 spl's. Spl's will start to cut a ring in the cylinder and it will build in till you can't get the magnm in anymore! Jeronimo. 0 -
I carried a Charter Bulldog .44 for years, with a ramp sight and bobbed hammer. I'm right handed, but used a lefthand highride thumb break holster on my belt in the small of my back. Sounds awkward but is easy to draw with practice, and wasn't visable when my coat was opened. I used Winchester Silver tips, not alot of penetration, but alot of knockdown.

Personally, I think if I was going to carry, I'd just carry either my S&W 64 2" .38Spl. or my old Colt Detective .38Spl., which is still in like new condition. I've found .38Spl. to be a plenty powerful enough cartridge. I know a lot of people don't think it has enough stopping power, but I think it's adequate. 0 -
Wanted to thank everyone for their input. I learn a lot on this forum and it is much better than hearing it at shows or shops where people are trying to sell something. Thanks Jeronimo I did not know that, I'll put as many mag loads as spcls from now on.

JAMN, I carry a Taurus Titanium .44 spl. and I think it is an excellent carry gun. I reload and my carry round is the Speer Gold Dot with 5 gr. Unique. It is doing about 950 fps which is plenty with a 240 gr. bullet. The gun empty is 18 oz. the .44 spl. was Elmer Keiths favorite handgun cartridge. The 3" barrel is the perfect compromise between a 2" and 4". I bought my Dad a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 spl to carry in the mountains while ginseng hunting. It is an excellent round.
