Legal Conversion
Does anyone know if it would be more economical to purchase a complete full auto from a class 3 dealer, buy a semi and install a legally register lower receiver or purchase a kit and add lower? How hard is it to find full auto lower receivers? How expensive are they? Does anyone know of any class 3 dealers that would have any lower receivers to sell? If so can you give me any contact information or better yet WEB site?

It's cheaper to buy a registered sear then a registered receiver. That being said, both will cost a large sum of money. I haven't priced sears lately but I was looking into getting one a little over a year ago and all the ones I found were in the $5k range. Search on gunbroker for an M16, the price will make you cringe.
If you do go the sear route, Stag Arms brand lowers don't have a block in them and will accept a DIAS. They're also very inexpensive and every bit the quality of a rock river, olympic or bushmaster.
As far as finding class III dealers in your area, use the "find a transfer dealer" function on the auction site. If someone is a class III dealer they'll post that with their information.[img][/img]0 -
I must be overlooking something. When I search GunBroker auctions for M16 sear about 11 items are listed ranging in price from $19 to $74. Searching for M16 lower receiver a large list is returned ranging in proces from $20 to $1500. What am I missing? Are the ltems listed 'bad' items because of their manufacture date? According to what I have seen I could puchase a semi BushMaster, sear (through a Class 3 dealer and registered) and have a complete firearm for around $1500. I have to be missing something large somewhere.....

First off, everyone has a full auto itch. I was fortunate and knew a fellow from the range. I was able to be around to 'demo' some full autos until I was satisfied I did not really want one.
My podnuh told me that his licence really only lets him demo or sell to LEO's. He may be just covering his azz in public to keep his friends (like ME) from asking him to help them out.
I realize that there are procedures in place that in theory you can become licenced to possess class III weapons. In practice, does that ever happen to the average joe who is not an FFL himself already.
Can someone clear the air ? Just a reference to the 'critical' ATF statute.

I would think that there are a lot of people out there with illegal class 3 firearms who may never be noticed. The thing for me is that I want to be able to shoot it without wondering if someone is coming down the road looking for the source of the noise which would probably be unmistakable for someone in an LE or ATF position. 0 -
Well Will you are missing a little bit, if I understand you correctly. I am not sure if you are aware but in 1986 the Federal law was changed so that NEW manaufacturing of machineguns for PUBLIC use was made illegal. Basicaly what that meens is any machingun (registerd part) you buy would have to been registerd before 1986. Unless you are a dealer which I am guessing you are not, or a "law enforcement" department you CANNOT buy, build, make, convert to make full auto any NEW firearm. Not all firearms have the same regiesterd part some are recivers, some are "sears", bolts, or other spicfic parts. That is why if you had a HK auto sear that is registerd in .308 you could put it in any NEW HK91, or clone since you are not making a new machingun. If you had a registed HK reciver you could not take the parts out and put them in a NEW HK, that would be illegal. The actual cost of making a machingun is no different then making a semi auto gun for the most part. So a brand new AR-15 semi cost about $900, and a brand new same style M-16 costs about $900 the problem is you are not allowed to buy the NEW M-16. According to SAR (Small Arms Review, Machingun magizine check it out) there is about 177,000 leagaly registed transferable machinguns available. This make the cost of private machinguns very expensive due to supply and demand. Hopefuly this helped a bit. Here is a short idea what you can expect to pay: MP5 LEO ~$1500, private ~$15,000-$19,000, M-16 LEO ~$900, private ~$12,000-$20,000, UZI private ~$5000, M-60 private ~30,000. The reason you didn't find the item on GB is because the part is called an "auto sear", not just a "sear".
You are probably correct, there are guys out there with illegal machine guns; if they are ever caught (and they do get caught occasionally), they will spend 10 years in a federal prison. But, life is full of choices.
If you are serious about buying a Class III weapon, the ONLY place that you can get one is through a Class III dealer in your state. Find the closest, & stop by & talk to him. But, if you can't spend the $5,000-10,000 that a machine gun will cost without hurting your budget, then maybe you should forget about the whole thing.

If you're serious about buying an autosear be careful. There are pre-82 (I think) auto sears out there for only a few hundred dollars that were made before autosears had to be registered. If you own an AR-15 then you can't legally own one of these DIAS's. DON'T BUY ONE if you plan on either buying an AR or using it in one as that would constitute having an unregistered MG. 0
