Why did S&W 870 replace 3000?

I was admiring a fine wood stock on long gun, the S&W 3000. It got me thinking, and I did a little research, which tells me the Model 870 replaced the 3000.

They sure got the blueing right on that shotgun!

Do I have the numbers right? Any specifics as to "Why"?

  S&W didn't make their own shotguns, & they didn't make their own knives, air pistols, etc. They contract with other companies to make these with their name on them, & they sell them through the S&W distribution system. Although S&W has never told us who makes what for them, it's sometimes possible to figure it out.

  So, Neal, what you are saying is eventually S&W decided to go with another design, or another supplier, or both, and voila, a new product line is born?
  
  What's your opinion of the 3000?
  Is capacity 3 shells total?

  The Model 3000 pump shotgun was made for S & W by the Japanese firearms manufacturer Howa. In the mid 80's S & W decided to get out of the longgun business. Mossberg sold them for a while after that.
  
  The 870 is a pump shotgun manufacturered by Remington.
