Price of a 8mm Mauser vs. Mosin Nagant
I want to thank everyone for the helpful information I have received but, on to business. I am price checking on an 8mm WWII Mauser and a Mosin Nagant for a cheap plinker. I know that 22s and sks are quite cheap for plinking but the bolt bug and its brother WWII bug has bit me. From what I can find the Mosin Nagant is a cheaper rife from the outlook however, the ammo is the main concern here. I would prefer to buy a more expensive gun if the ammo is cheaper. A person will spend more money in their life on ammo than the costs of the guns. Along with ammo cost is the ammo has to be non-corrosive. This is a must otherwise the price of the rifle will matter. I know that Sportsman, Cabela's, and a few other websites sell ammo for the mentioned rifles but I would like your input. Thanks

If you want cheap cheap 8mm ammo, you will have to deal with corrosive primers. There is a good bit of surplus out there that shoots fine, but you do have to address the primer issue.
The current manufacture Mosin ammo shoots OK. It is not overly expensive, but I would not call it cheap. I don't shoot my Mosin much...and that may be why.
For the Mosin, I believe you are stuck with factory ammo, but you can reload 8mm economically.....Then add to that you will find a load that your gun shoots well. Then you have economical ammo that performs better than anything you can buy.

6 of one 1/2 doz. of the other. both are relativly cheep righ now, both have surplus ammo available (both corrosive and non). I would take a m-98 over a mosin nagant but then I've got both. 0 -
Go with the Mauser,far greater ammo selection,far greater parts and after market accessories available and a much better rifle to start. If you ever want to scope it or sporterize it you can easily do so.If you reload you can buy cheap bullets in bulk and load non.corrosive ammo for almost less than surplus corrosive, once you accumulate some brass.The Mauser is a much simpler rifle to work with. 0 -
I have a m91/30 mosin and 2 Mausers,a Czech 98/22 and a k98 and from my experience the Mauser is the are superior rifle. The action appears to be stronger, the ammo is cheaper than the mosin, parts are easy to find and the gun is more accurate. 0 -
You can at least set the safety on a Mauser. Those Russians must have strong thumbs and forearms.[:0] I have both and the Mauser is the way better finished rifle. Now with that said, I still like to shoot the little M-44 carbine. Big THUMP, Big FIRE, Great cheap fun!
Buy a $100.00 Turk Mauser and one of those 1440 round battle packs of corrosive ammo and shoot, and shoot, and shoot. Wash it out with Windex and you're ready to do it again. More cheap fun.
