researching a gun's history

I'm new here, so please bear with me. My father gave me a .38 Police Positive Special in wonderful condition. I've had it about a year now, and I would like to find out what year it was made. Does anyone know how I can go about this?

The last forum I entered ,just to get this advice, GREATLY disappointed me. I really hope you guys and gals can do better.

  Thanks rufe_snow. now I know it was made in 1973. Do you guys think there might be anything special or valuable in this knowledge? Not that I'm planning to sell or anything, it's the only gun that fits my hand. Thanks so much!

  In this case, no. It simply allows you to tell your friends when your Colt was made. [:)]
  
  There are some circumstances, with some collectable firearms (which yours is not), the manufacture date can have an effect on value, can determine whether a firearm was made for blackpowder or smokeless powder, can add to the gun's historical interest, or can even determine whether a particular model is safe to shoot.
