Springfield Armory Model 1898 30-40 Krag

I am looking for information on this gun. It was just given to me and I would like to know it's history. I see it has no value but would still like to know. It has a fixed box like on the right side where the door flips open to load. It is the rifle and not the carbine. Thanks in advance.

    Bubba, that rifle can have some value to it. The Krag was the first U.S. smokeless powder rifle. It was only used for a short time until the introduction of the Springfield 1903. Some samples of the old Krags can bring in a nice chunk of change, especially if it's still in it's origional military configuration, unchanged and still functional.

    So, don't just sell it or give it away, post a picture or two and the serial # and I'm sure somebody here could give you a relatively accurate appraisal of the rifle. You might be suprised.

    everything has value, the krags are bringing good $$$ if in original conditon. If yours has been sporterised it's still worth a couple hundred as a shooter (have it inspected by a gunsmith if you intend to shoot it). Pictures would be a big help to determine what you have and value.

    Thank you gentleman for your replies. When I get home this morning I will take a couple of photos and recheck the ser.#. The photos I have seen have short front sights. The front blade on this one is approx. 3" long??? So please look back here again after I get the photos on so you can help me determine what I have. Thanks again. Bubba
