What Is "Pinned and Recessed"

I've seen ads stating the barrel is or is not pinned and the cylinder is or is not recessed. What are they talking about? (revo's)

    Older S & W revolvers, ( prior to 1981 ). The barrels had a small retaining pin with a hole drilled threw the shank of the barrel and frame. The back part of the cylinder was counterbored for the cartridge rims.

    Both of the above were done away with as cost saving operations, in I believe the early 80's. As it was felt they were unnecessary "Gingerbread".

    S&W revolvers that are not pinned have barrel and frames with crush fitted threads. Slightly mismatched so when they are attached they basically crossthread them so they don't work loose. It works but not easy to change as the pinned ones.

    Me too. I mean, I understood what pinned and recessed meant, but I didn't know about "crush threading". Thanks for the info. Just another reason to never sell my S&W model 28.
