Hi All,
I've been out of the gun scene for a few years due to unforseen problems (ugg was unemployed [:D] ) and had a question for you experts out there.
I've heard from several people that the preban bill, the one where you had to buy a gun made before '93 to use all the cool gadgets, has died! Is this true?
I guess what I'm getting at is, I would like to put an underfolder on one of my ak's that was made after '93. I've heard from a few dealers that this is the case but have learned to be cautious in taking their advice. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.

You must still be cautious!!!! If you put a underfolder stock on a AK variant made or imported after the Ban, you must go U.S. compliant. You must change out more parts to U. S. A. made parts than have orginal parts, roughly 7 to 8 parts changed out !!! The sunseting of the Ban, does NOT give you the right to do anything you want to a weapon, there are still laws governing the transformation of weapons and what you can do to them !!!! BE CAREFULL !!!! 0 -
Some states still have the assualt weapons law in effect. Such as NEW YORK. 0 -
Also many of the AKs that were designed to use an under folding stock had receiver reinforcement bosses on the sides where the stock hinged. These will probably have to be added to make most work with this style of stock. Side folders work better as you don't have to remove the longer mags to operate them. 0 -

Is this the same deal you used to have to do in order to have a high cap mag? I know that for some strange reason if you had 7 or 8 u.s. parts like you mentioned you could have a 30 round mag and still be legal as long as local law didn't prohibit it.

After looking around I noticed that the underfolder seemed to be made for milled receivers only because of the gap left when you remove the wooden stock or the missing "bosses" as you mentioned. I did however find a few nice side folders I may consider.

The issue with the AK is that the '94 ban was pertaining to US-made firearms. A Norinco NHM-90 or other imported rifle would need to have enough US parts (i.e. US compliance kit etc) to be considered a US-made firearm per BATF rulings. At which point, you could add a folder, bayonet lug, etc.

If you're looking for a pre-ban style AK it's a lot cheaper to purchase a newly manufactured one then to try to retrofit a "post-ban" style rifle with american parts on top of the folder and new barrel. There are many companies out there that have started making AK style rifles with all the "evil" features.

You need to check your Local/State laws to see if you can legaly convert an "ban " configurations, to the Evil preban configurations.
Also do a search on BATF regulation18 USC section 922(r) as to the US made parts count you may have to put on a particular rifle in order to gain federal compliance.
