Mossbergboogie
Does anyone have or had a mossberg lever action centerfire rifle. I want a lever action but dont want to pay a huge price.

    Look for a used Marlin they go for 130.00 to 185.00 around me and I think there a better gun.

    It takes a bit to get used to the levering action on the Mossberg because it is not as positive as a Winchester or a Marlin. I've heard that the chambering mechanism is a bit fragile but it didn't seem that way to me. Parts are difficult to find. Personally, unless you are a collector, I'd suggest that you wait for a good used Marlin that is within your budget. There are plenty of them going up for auction on a regular basis at reasonable prices. Don't forget the Sears, Wards Marlins that often bring lower money and are just as good.

    You are certainly right here. I have a Henry Big Boy in 44 mag and it certainly wasn't $200.00 new. I don't even think I have seen the 22 Henry's for $200.00.

    OK if i got a marlin could i get one with a 16 in. barrel thats where i run into troubles. Because if i buy a bit more pricy gun i want a 16 in barrel.

    Your question about lever action rifles is a good one. Why do you want a 16 inch barrel? If you hunt it will cost you in terms of muzzle velocity and killing power. With the standard 20 inch carbine you can expect 100 to 150 fps more velocity out of the barrel and better accuracy with the longer site radius. They are also more available on the used gun market.

    That means you can find them for a better price. Speaking of price, the best value out there right now where I live is an "ickky" post 64 winchester in 30-30. Just make sure you get one after S/N 3,500,000 or so. This still makes sense for someone's first rifle or for a special purpose gun for coyotes, whitetail, hogs, etc.

    The Marlins are excellent quality and on average more accurate than the Winnies. And with a Marlin you could get one in 35 Remington for a little more than a 30-30. The ammo is a little more expensive than 30-30 but they are proven short range deer and bear slayers.

    I personally would skip the Mossberg idea and test fire the Marlins and Winchesters to see which feels best to you...then search for the that one at gunauction.
