Why not a 597?
In a recent previous thread, posters were warned off the Remington 597. Pardon my ignorance, but why? I have not owned or shot one; just curious why Remington would manufacture and release a toad.

Go search the Remington threads about the 597 on Rimfirecentral.com and you will understand. If you want an accurate AND very reliable Remington semi-auto, then get a 552 Speedmaster. 0 -
They have released several over the years. Nylon, Viper now the 597. Nothing but problems with jams, feeds and crap clips plastic or metal it doesnt matter. 0 -

I got a 522 (viper) 9 years and have never really had any problems except with CCI stingers. I also had a 597 and I definitely agree with you on that one. I seldom got through one mag with that thing. I gave it away a few months later.
Save the seals-club a liberal instead.0 -
I guess some are good and some aren't. The first gift I gave my wife after she came to live with me was a remington 597 in blue/wood. We've both shot it quite a bit and it has never had a single FTF or FTE like some other people's rifles have. Mine has also proven itself to be very accurate.

SLINGER, I have the 597 .22 mag and have never had a jam over the past 5 or 6 years I have owned it. Mine has been very accurate and reliable. I have read alot of people complaining about theirs though. I guess I just got a good one. I recently bought an all metal clip for it just to have in case the plastic one ever fails. I had the Marlin .22 mag semi auto (model 922 I think) and it was a nice gun but was not very accurate, so I sold it and bought the 597. The accuracy is impressive with the 597 and the dual rails that the bolt travels on is a smart idea. I think most people that were dissatisfied with the 597 had feeding problems due to the plastic clip.(nobody likes a gun that jams) I think I read Remington did some design changes to the later 597 models, but it still gets poopooed often. I like mine and as long as it keeps feeding reliably and shooting accurately, I have no plans to part with it. Just my honest opinion.

I was given a new in the box 597 matte black with a gray synthetic stock. This gun rides in a gun rack behind the seat of my work truck for well over a year almost 2 I think. I've put only about 500 or 600 rounds through it of cheap ammo and have never had it do anything other than shoot perfectly, no jams or any other trouble and I find it to be really accurate too. I'm not a big fan of the gun just stating my factual experience with it. 0 -

In 1998 I bought a 597 and a 10/22. The 10/22 didn't last 6 months, but I still have the 597. I haven't had any problems with it and would highly recomend it to any one. 0 -

And how, Pray tell, did a 10/22 last you only six months???? I have oh, I'd say, about 20 ga-billion-zillion rounds through a 10-22 and it always goes bang. Well, at least it goes bang until the magazine is empty. If it gets slow to feed I HOSE it out with wd-40 and keep blasting.
What catastrophic failure caused the demise of your 10-22??0
