Value of Colt Shotgun
A friend owns a Colt marked shotgun that was produced in the 1960"s. It was not made by Colt, but was made for Colt and is marked as a Colt product. He was told that only approx. 150 of these were made to test the market and Colt never did list or market them. Is this a true story?
We have often speculated about its' value since it was not actually made by Colt but is marked Colt, the low number produced should make it very rare, but what is the demand for such an item? Are there any reported sales to help establish a value?
Would appreciate any information about this item.

You didn't say what type of shotgun it is, but if it's a side-by-side double barrel, it may be one made for Colt in 1961-1962 by Fabrication Mechanique in France. According to the current Blue Book of Gun Values, approximately 25-50 guns were manufactured in both 12 and 16 gauge. The serial numbers produced for Colt ranged between 467,000-469,000. Values vary from $320 in 60% condition to $675 in 100% condition.

Sorry about the inadequate information, I should know better.
Spider guessed correctly about it being a sxs double barrel.
The left barrel is marked "FOR 12 GAUGE 3", the left barrel on the chamber area marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG Co". The right barrel is marked "MADE in FRANCE". The serial number marked on bottom of left barrel and forearm release mechanism is 469065.
As mentioned previously, we have often speculated about value. It would certainly be a rare Colt marked item, but know it's the old supply/demand thing.

My database says that the Colt Custom, Double Barrel, Side by Side came in 12 and 16 Gauges, Double Trigger, Automatic Ejector, Checkered Stock, Beavertail Forend, Hammerless...In as New Condition is Worth $2,250.00..................

Hello paythings: Have several books they both say "Colt Custom double Barrel Hammerless" SxS. Made 1961 -1962 by Fabrrication Mechanique. (French I believe). Very low number according to one book about 100, with the serial number range 467000 .
as far as price, no whee near what the Captain said, but that doesn't mean he's wrong, my book is 3 years old and at that time if the gun graded at 100% the value listed is $675. My book from 1983 shows the value at $320, so it more than double in 20 years, and it is probably worth more than the $675 quoted from 3 years ago. so I've pretty much have confirmed what others have posted from my books.
