44 Magnum Rifles
Who else makes a 44 magnum rifle other than marlin and ruger?

I have been "thinking" about possibly purchasing a rifle in .44 mag. for some possible in your face feral hog hunting in some pretty thick brush.
I have been told that the Ruger's semi auto carbine is a good choice but i have never owned a high powered hunting rifle in semi auto mode and i dont know much about their reliability.
I was also told that the Marlin lever action is another good choice.
I recently found out that Howa also makes a 20 inch barreled lever .44 as well.
So i was wondering what the pros and cons of the choices would be and an important question is if the triggers on all three of these are easily adjusted??
As a Remington 600 fan i certainly would prefer one of these to be a carbine length for fast snap shooting.
Lastly,just how reliable is this caliber for a clean kill on whitetail deer at a distance of 100-125 yards??

I have the Ruger Carbine and the Marlin 1895 lever in 44 Mag. I have never had any problem dropping deer quickly with 240 - 255gr soft points with the Marlin. Most hunts have been in brush cover where iron sights did the job for relatively short shots. The Ruger is a nice shooting short gun, and is more comfortable for me to shoot. I have not hunted with it but cannot see where it would not perform well enough at the ranges you mention. Enjoy.

I have hunted with several Marlins in 44mag , they do a very good job and will works just fine for what you want ,
be advised that Ruger also makes a lever gun in 44mag , its called the 96/44 I beleive and they did make their bolt action in 44mag for a while , so you may want to look around a bit to see what you can find0 -
I've killed a few deer w/my old model Ruger.Longest shot was about 125yds and knocked her straight down.Didn't tear up much meat either.I've all but retired that one since I've added so many others to the collection.I think I'll dig her back out and get her ready for this next season since the place I'll be huntin' the most won't give me a shot over 100 yds anyway.

TEX, I looked for many years at the gunshows to find a Ruger .44 Semi auto and was happy to hear they were reintroducing the Deerfield. I bought one as soon as it hit the market. It is very effective on whitetails at reasonable distances. I use the 240 gr. Hornady XTP bullet with 26 grains of H-110. I have not taken a deer with it yet, but my son has killed a few with it and it does the job well with very little damage to the meat like some rifles. If I was hunting hogs at close range, I would opt for the semi auto for the quick follow up if needed. These guns are short, accurate and fast. The factory trigger is actually very crisp. I have never felt the need to adjust it. I paid $469 for it NIB.

Another question guys.
I know how tuff hogs are and i usually go for a head or neck shot because that's the only sure way to anchor them immediately and i have found that no matter which rifle i use(.270,30-06,.308,.243,and 6mm) a body shot just sends them running and usually without a blood trail even though the bullet exits.
So the question is at ranges from 40-100 yards does the .44 mag. bullet usually exit game such as a whitetail deer??

The few deer I've gotten with mine were all hit just behind the shoulder.All shots exited and left a hole slightly larger than the entry hole.Very little meat damage.[^]

Hogs are tough! I've read articles about 44mag handgun hunters emptying 5-6 rounds into an animal before it dropped. I hit boar around 300lbs, with a 300gr HP 45-70, in the low shoulder/vitals area. It dropped after 10 yards and there was not exit wound, but a lot of wasted meat. First and last time I used a HP on a hog. 0 -
Best shot on a hog of any size is in or just behind the ear.

I could not agree more Bobby.
Frankly as small a load of powder that goes into the .44 case i am really surprised that these bullets will actually exit a deer out past 50 yards.
Perhaps that pistol cartridge has a lot more oomph than i previously thought.
You learn something new everyday.

A .44 mag or .45colt in a carbine is a whole 'nuther ballgame as far as 'stopping power' goes.A nice max load of ,say,H110 will get your attention on ignition.:)

I just hate the idea of reloading so often when engaged in heated combat with varmints--four-legged or two. Haven't you ever been attacked by a herd of wild hogs or feral gerbils? BANG BANG BANG BANG is often just enough to get'em really mad! And sometimes, on a hog, it takes four shots just to get them to turn sideways for that famous "shot behind the ear" you herald so highly. [:D]0 -

Where I hunt wild hogs and feral gerbils in west Texas, the only vegetation is mesquite trees and gentlemanly-pear cactus--neither of which do I intend to climb while sober. Someone else's philosophy works for me: "Load on Sunday, shoot all week."[8D]0 -
