Savage 340

I was looking into buying one of these rifles in 222 as a gun to beat around. they are pretty cheap and i mainly want a cheap 222. i have a rem 700, but dont want to beat it up. i was wondering about the accuracy of the 340's. thanks

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

    What were the production dates for the savage 340? I bought one cheap at the gunshow and it does not have a serial number. Not very pretty, but the buck fell over dead and didn't complain on my very first shot with it.

    Ive owned and shot several of these and they are a good knock around rifle. They are accurate enough for hunting but not for trying to shoot tiny groups from a bench. The design of it precludes most attempts at accurizing. It is not bedded in the stock like most bolt actions but has a lug banded to the barrel that anchors it.It cant be glas-bedded or floated or any other tricks to help it. The trigger is not adjustable either, so it is a case of having to live with what you get. The 222 is so accurate as a cartridge that I wouldnt be afraid to buy it if the price is right. Should be a good hunting gun.

    I have a 30-30 Savage 340 which shoots 2 inch or less three shot grounps at 100 yards. It is not fancy but the accuracy is fine for the range of
    the caliber. Try it and if it not adequate you can probably get yuour money out of the resale. Good luck.

    I also have the bolt action 30-30 and it's great as an all around rifle.

    I have at least one of every savage 340/342/840 ever made. I need only at this point to pick up a Stevens 325 to complete the set, but will likely wait for the right deal to get that one. The only one that does not shoot particularly well is one of the 225 Winchesters that has a pitted barrel, but it still comes in around "2 or so at 100 yards. I would not have expected to get the general level of accuracy I have from these guns, but all around it has been spectacular!

    The best of the bunch for me has been the 342 Hornet, with the 222 Rem coming in a very close second. On a good day the Hornet will group at "1 at 100 yds, and do so with BORING repeatability (no 5th shot Hornet flyers from this little wonder!). The 222, after around 5 fouling rounds will actually group at "1/2 using 50 grain Sierra's and BL-C2. For a gun that I paid $250 (including vintage scope and Savage mount), I think that's pretty darned good and would not consider the 340's to be knock around guns from that perspective!

    i had a 340 in 22 hornet that shot 1-1.25 m.o.a. with a 4x scope
    without fail. the trigger is about impossible to work on, but
    the pull on mine was o.k. anyway.

    I bought a 340 in 30-30 for my 80 year old father to hunt deer because arthritis in his shoulders prevents him from handling heavy rifles and he prefers (or never mastered scope sights) open sights. He took two in as many days with it so he thinks its a wonderful rifle.

    I had a 340 in 222 Remington years ago. I removed the barrel band and free floated the barrel (YES, it can be done). It would shoot Sierra 50gr spitzers into an inch or less at 100 yards all day long. The only thing I didn't like about the gun was its single locking lug.

    i once had one of these little beauties in .222 rem it would group around 1" to 1 1/2". I sold it in a fit of stupidity and i sure wish i had it back

    I had a 340 in 22hornet, it would shoot .75 at 100yrds with factory ammo. I paid $150.00 for it in 2002.
