+P rounds
My father told me to keep my gun loaded with +P rounds, but when I go shooting for fun, I should not shoot the +P. I know the +P are hotter than regular rounds, but I'm not sure why I shouldn't shoot them. Thanks, GunMetalBlue

What type of gun is it?
It basically depends on whether your gun was manufactured as specifically rated to be able to handle +P ammunition.
Generally, a gun that is manufactured as specifically rated as able to handle +P ammunition can be fired with +P anytime you want to.
A gun that is NOT manufactured as specifically rated to be able to handle +P ammo should never have +P ammo loaded in it.0 -
Because +P ammo is loaded to higher pressure and will cause increased wear and tear on your firearm, particularily if it is a smaller framed pistol for that caliber. It's usually used for carry ammo only by most folks

I have a .38 Police Positive Special. I trust what my father tells me, but I was just curious. I have fired +P rounds in it, but only about six. He told me to keep it loaded with the +P for home defense only. What do you guys think? 0 -
Not sure if your supposed to fire +p in that model, someone else can help you on that {but Older colts where usually not +p rated }
I will tell you I am a very firm believer in practicing with what you carry or load your gun with; different bullets have different points of impact, different rates of recoil, I practice with the same weight of bullet, same powder charge I would use to defend myself0 -
Think of it this way. Which engine is going to last longer--one that is driven around at the posted speed limits and not hot-rodded--or one that is driven on the Nascar circuit or on the drage strip. That is about the difference between the 2. The regular loads are loaded at velocities intended to give adequate power and still keep the chamber pressure down to make the weapon last longer. The +p loads are intended for the extreme use situation like hunting or self defense. They are in effect hotrod loads. A steady diet of +p will shorten the life of any handgun when you conpare it to the regular loads. That does not mean that a few rounds of +p ammo and the pistol is toast. It just means that over the long haul it will not stay tight as long and accuracy and wear will take place at a faster rate. 0 -
I would NOT shoot +P in a Colt Police Positive. They were not rated for it. I would use a good factory load .38Spl. like Winchester's Super X Silvertip Hollow Point, which is an excellent personal protection round. It's plenty powerful enough and I agree with 1911a1fan that you should consistantly load and shoot the same type of ammunition in a gun used for self defense, so that you will be proficient with it and know exactly how it's going to behave and shoot. 0
