SCOPE MOUNT???

I have a Tasco 3x9x40 scope and want to mount it to a Remington 788. I have the rings but not the base plate the rings mount to. What kind of mount base should I get? How do I tell Weaver rings from others? How is the mount base measured or are the mount bases all the same? Information is greatly appreciated. Bob

    The caliber will determine which base it takes. For example, if its a .308, it will take a Redfield JR 788 XLA. (extra long action).

    74M, The base really depends on what style ring you have. Some are Weaver style, some are turn in rings and some are the quick release type. I personally prefer to mount a scope as low to the bore as possible without the objective bell actually touching the barrel. A matchbook folded once is my rule of thumb for clearance between scope and barrel. I always use #242 loctite on the base screws and I prefer the Millet Angle loc ring for a weaver style base. I never loctite the ring srews. Some other bases have a turn in slot front and back and there is a dovetail that you actually twist the ring into and it is very tight. Most come prelubed with graphite to prevent galling the steel. It is always a good idea to make sure there is some type of lube and never use the scope body to turn the rings in. A small scewdriver handle or a wooden 1" dowel works great. Some have screw that are windage adjustable that you basically tighten both sides and it grips the ring from each side. Others have a turn in on one end and the twin screws on the other. I highly reccomend the Redfield one piece base for your gun and the Redfield rings. Your local gun shop should be able to assist.

    Most vendors will have a reference chart where you can look up what is needed to see what components to buy. You need to know the model of the gun and the (objective -primarily)model of the scope to determine low, high, or medium rings.
