What's the differance between a smith 645 and a 4506 smith they both look the same to me. What might the value of a 645 be 98% condition.What year were they made. Thank's in advance for you'r help

  S&W made engineering changes in their "hi cap" autos every year or two; most improvements were not readily visible. The 645 can probably be called a "2nd generation" gun, while the 4506 is a "3rd generation" gun. Biggest change is probably an improvement to trigger pull.
  
  I would expect a 645 to sell in the $275-325 range.

  Biggest difference is in the grip and grip frame. The 645 has full grip straps and the grips are just scales. The later gun uses a one piece grip that incorporates the mainspring housing.

  No major redesign of the trigger mechanism was done between these pistols. The noticeable improvement in pulls between some Gen 2 and 3 S&W autopistols is because some of the 2's were still equipped with an older safe-cock notch style hammer. This is unnecessary due to the firing pin block change and causes a big CLICK in the first third or so of the trigger pull. Ease the hammer back with your thumb and if it locks a few millimeters from the firing pin you've got the old style.
  
  I know this situation existed with their 9mm pistols, but I'm not sure if you'll run into it with the .45's.
  
  If you find your pistol is so equipped it's a simple upgrade that only takes a few minutes to accomplish, provided you're capable of disassembling the pistol yourself. The hammer is a drop in part and requires no special gunsmith fitting or tools to replace.
