Must handguns always be shiped next day air? Are there any other ways they can be shiped?

    Can handguns be shipped via Fed Ex? If so, how do their rates compare with UPS?

    Hello it is my understanding that an FFL holder can ship to another FFL and does not have to ship next day air. However if you go into either UPS or FEDEX and are truthful then you must ship a handgun next day air.

    I see how you do it then. Since most of you are FFL holders you don't have to pay the outrageous overnight shipping rates. I have already arranged recieving the gun through my FFL but I bought from a private owner who does not have an FFL. Does anyone know any shipping options for private citizen to FFL that might be cheaper?

    A nonlicensee can only ship a handgun by Fedex Next Day Air services, with "Adult signature required" sticker, & from a Fedex customer service counter. UPS no longer accepts firearms except from customers with regular scheduled pickups.

    UPDATE: UPS has changed their rules AGAIN this month; now they are back to the old procedure of also accepting handguns at UPS Customer Service counters. Of course, they are still Next Day Air.

    The reason for the low shipping rate is most FFL dealers ship thru the Post Office .Non FFLs are not allowed to.[:)]

    As long as you are shipping to an FFL, you can just not tell UPS what's in the package (lie) and ship ground. Of course, UPS could possibly deny any insurance claims since you would have violated their shipping policies.

    Maybe the guy at the counter was new but I shipped my Taurus Tracker back to Taurus for repair via UPS Gnd for about $6.00 from a UPS service center.

    Sometimes the clerk at a UPS Store will accept a firearm. Sometimes the clerk at the UPS Customer Service Counter will accept a handgun for ground shipping. Sometimes a UPS driver will pick a gun up from your home. Many folks at UPS, or at packing stores, just don't know the constantly changing rules. If you got one by them, good for you.

    The problem is, if your gun is lost or damaged, UPS will refuse to pay you for it. And, if you violated federal law (say, by not requesting an "adult signature required" sticker), YOU are the one who could be arrested & charged.

    It's up to YOU to know & follow UPS rules & federal law.

    actually all handguns are suppose to be shipped air..long guns are the only thing you can ship ground..we pay the same rates that everyone else pays

    Not really.

    Most valuables shipped by Fedex & UPS ----cameras, jewelry, watches ----go by GROUND. The companies either buy insurance from UPS, their own insurance company, or self-insure. Guns are often recognized in shipment based on the shipper/recipient name ----Colt, Bob's Gun Shop, etc ---and handguns, because of their small size, were targets of those Fedex/UPS employees who are career criminals. Both shippers recognized that they could reduce loss by employee theft simply by requiring that handguns be shipped Next Day Air; these guns are kept in the Valuables Room until shipped, & never sit in a warehouse over night or on weekends. It's a win-win-win for the shippers; they stick it to gun owners, they profit handsomely from shipping handguns, & they don't have to bother screening new employees for honesty.

    There has never been a legal requirement that handguns be shipped Next Day Air. USPS has never had a problem with the theft of handguns.
