home protection!

i was reading earlier about what round to protect one's home.

someone mentioned that cycling a gun would just alert the intruder.

true story. 1977, home alone, family/myself was suppose to the in tennessee for thanksgiving. wife/children were there, i stayed home because of work on friday.

around 1am the backdoor was busted open. second door to house was opened.

my comment, do you want part of this? shucked the pump.

end of story. he ran, no need to shoot.

    I think you did the right thing. You could have laid in wait and wasted the intruder which would have made good reading for those who favor the final solution. On the downside you would have had a huge mess to clean up, involvement in a lot of police officialdom and possibly your own recriminations the rest of your life. I had an experience similar to yours but since it did not involve a shotgun I won't go into it here. Glad I didn't blast him.

    Always let them hear you cycle the action on that old 12 and if they don't get out after hearing that then they must be one crazy dope head.

    I am glad the guy ran, shooting someone is NOT fun or easy. And one tends to get extremly nervous. That is why I want my gun already loaded and ready to go. If you are not calm (AND YOU WON'T BE) anything can go wrong, like a jam or whatever. I have shot in matches a lot and the nerves are always a few steps above vs. practice, and in a real life encounter it will be MANY steps above.

    Wolfdog's right - that works about 99.99% of the time! However, it
    didn't completely work for my wife's close friend back in Chicago,
    in the late 70s. The idiot HEARD and SAW the 1200 in her hands and
    kept on coming anyway! She didn't stop until the well was dry!
    Later, she told Kathy, that the worst part was cleaning him up!

    ... it was definitely the end of that serial rapist's career!

    I don't have any qualm with ratcheting the shotgun as a warning, or even cutting loose without warning, as long as I know that what I'm shooting at isn't my wife or my son. I just want to make sure that the round I use will do it's duty, no question.

    I also have no qualm with my tag line...shoot, shovel, and shutup.

    mallard I am not surprised that the sound of racking a shotgun slide ran the bad guy off.
    While working with police, I saw them, more than once, employ this technique. It always got the adversaries' attention, and calmed down the situation. Never saw the cops have to shoot.
    That sound is the universal language.
