What is the difference between a "pre 64" and not other than the obviousm year thing.

    I like the looks of the winchester model 70 super shadow but how do they shoot. How do they comper to other guns like the remington 700? Any help would be great. thanks

    ..some say it is quality. Have worked both pre and post 64 model 70's and preferr the "pre-64". Although the newer Winchesters are exemplary in quality. But since I collect the pre-64 I guess I favor the '52 models...

    I had heard that it had somewhat to do with the ejector in particular, and all around quality in general. The Model 70 is generally a darned impressive rifle at any age! Mine have been great.

    I have a model 70 made in 1966 and as far as I can tell the quality is outstanding. Far better than many brand new guns I see today at shows. It's a 270 and shoots quarter sized groups at 100 yards.

    the pre-64 had a controlled-round,mauser type extractor preferred by many for dangerous game. they do offer that on their featherweight classic now. i have one in 6.5x55 and love it.
    after reading the work of others who know a lot more than i do on the subject,i belive the quality after WW2 declined as production costs increased
    and brought on changes after 64.

    I have 3 Mdl 70s post 64 and a pre 64. The newer ones are much lighter and hunter friendly. The pre is a collector and don't see nasty weather. My newest one a 6.5X55 Ftwght has the older mauser style bolt. All are excellent shooters!!

    The pre-64s actions were forged, the newer ones are cast. The technology of steel making in the last forty years has progressed so that the newer cast ones are as strong as the older forged ones, ofr at least so strong that the cartridge case will give out long before tha action. The barrels are now hammer forged whereas the older ones were cut, and again- tech improvements have pretty much compensated for the loss of hand work, same thing on the stocks. So basically, now the difference is the knowledge that with a pre-64 yhou're holding a piece of history with much craftsmanship built into it; whereas with a new one you're getting a great piece of equipment, but one that hasn't as much of the human touch.

    I have a M-70 HEAVY VARMINT short action. black receiver, stainless
    barrel, black synthetic stock. Is the receiver cast or forged?
    WHo made gun? I heard that the stock and barrel were made by H-S
    PRECISION, and they built the HEAVY VARMINT MODELS for winchester.
    Is this true?

    So would you say the newer ones are a quality rifle as well ? Just looking for an opinion. I own a Mod 70 in 7mm mag, with a few tweaks it is easily MOA or less (much in this case)

    A little story
    I looked for a long time to try and find a .264 around these parts but never had much luck and didnt want a new one or least couldnt afford one at the time.
    I was working at a power plant in Va. and was rooming with a guy from Ky. to save a few dollars, he told me he was going home that comming weekend and also mentioned he thought about selling his deer rifle and may bring it back to show some of the guys at the plant who were interested.
    I told him I might be interested in it to go ahead and bring it back ..... I opened the case and couldnt belive it a model 70 in .264, I never told the felow I was even looking for one when we discussed hunting, I asked him what he wanted for it and he said $300 .... I shucked the money out right on the spot but when I returned home after the job was finished my father fell in love with it so I gave it to him for Christmas.
    Still looking for another but with Dad .... one day it will return to me. ..... Was it a Pre 64 ? I have no idea but I took it to the gun store and put a scope on it and the man who owned the store said it was, couldnt wait to get out of there because he could not understand the term .. Not for Sale !

    pre-64's were also machined from bar stock. The barrels front sight, is machined as part of the barrel, NOT dovetailed in like newer rifles. The actions were all hand fitted as well, every part was fitted by 1 employee until it was right. Now days, they are turned out on an assembly line. The machines and CAD programs make todays products very true, but the "old school" still beleive they have something special in the pre-64 win. For me, accuracy is all that matters, and the pre-64 is just NOT the action to acheive that. I prefer a push feed action like the rem700 or the newer win70's.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
