ithaca 10 gauge auto question
just picked up a ithaca 10 guage auto, need to know if anyone has a opinion as far as its reliability. i got it for deer and goose hunting, the bottom line is should i keep it or get rid of it? any testimonials would be appreciated. thanks

Goose yes, deer NO, turkey yes
Love the gun small kick with bird shot( steel)
But a 3 1/2 inch slug [:0]
Never had a miss fire in 10 years
Heavy ,never carry mine to far that for sure0 -
The Ithaca Mag-10 is a fairly good design. The first thing you want to do is get a Wolf Spring kit to replace the factory springs. These are available at Ballistic Products Inc. The second thing you will want to do is to keep it very clean. The Mag-10 and the SP-10(Remington version of the Mag-10) need to be kept clean.

Sell it if you plan on walking alot when you hunt. Get a 3.5 inch 12 ga. the 10 ga. is just too damn heavy to be carrying all day turkey hunting. Loaded with 3 shells and a sling I think mine was over 12lbs. Might as well carry 2 shotguns! 0 -
Redman, I have the SP10 which is almost identical to the Ithaca. I don't know why spriger told you "no" for deer. Here in eastern Virginia shotguns all are that is allowed for deer in many counties and alot of counties do not allow slugs. That is the whole reason I bought my SP10. I wanted to have maximum firepower for the whitetails. I have seen too many lost with a 12 ga. I bought mine about 12 years ago and it has taken many deer and a bobcat. It came with a 30" barrel and I bought a 22" barrel with rifle sights and a special design choke tube for buckshot. It throws an excellent pattern at 50 yds with the 22" barrel(devastating on deer). I do alot of walking when I hunt and unless you are on the little/light side, it isn't bad. I am 5'10" and 200lbs. and I carry this gun literally for miles upon miles every year. It doesn't bother me. The extra weight dampens recoil. If you are not afraid of carrying the few extra pounds, I say keep it. I'll never part with mine.It is my favorite shotgun for whitetails. It is also an excellent waterfowl gun as well. The 30" barrel is for waterfowl the 22" for deer and turkey. Here is a picture of mine with the 22" buckshot barrel.[;)]

thanks dondalinger for the reply, ive alwaysed used a twelve gauge but ive been wanting to try a 10 guage not because ive missed with the 12, which would be rediculis thinking. anyone that does so should not be in the woods. and to cartog, i sorry but ive heard maybe two good stories about 3&1/2 mags out of 100. anyway, about real guns, dondalinger, what do you find is the best 10 gauge load. mine is a 32 inch. im worried about shooting anything more than oo, because if there is more than 1 deer they might all go down? what ya think and because your so close we might be able to do some hunting? got a few primo spots. redman. 0 -

i forget for sure, either 1979/80 lead was declared illegal in big sandy bottom for 12 guage. i picked up a mag 10 sn 100353x when on a ship in the northeast usa.
i shot boxes of ammo thru it, i never got used to it. i always shot an old winchester pump since mid fifties. i still shoot the same gun but bought one made in 1958 for 2005/06 season. the older one is worn out.
the mag 10 cycled so slow i could hear the action. i never had a triple with the mag 10. several time i had three falling with the winchester before the first one hit the water.
the mag 10 is a heavy gun, the forearm was to large. i kept it about one year. a person could give me one but i would not take it hunting.
