Winchester 62A

WM22
I was given a rifle from my Father which actually belonged to my Grandfather. It is a model 62A 22S L or L R and am trying to find out some history, it has the single screw on the left side and has a serial number starting 259000 range with matching serial numbers. Not interested in selling, just would like to know about the weapon, thanks

    A friend inhareted a 62A Winchester .22 I would like to know somthing about it like why the A and when it was interduced and aproximate value in an almost excellent condition w/ no alterations Thanks

    Welcome to the forum. Your rifle dates to 1958. I was not aware of any of these rifles with a stainless barrel. The very light tan stock with carving will deflate the value quite a bit.

    I agree with snickers concerning the DOM, and that none of them were made with stainless steel barrels.

    With that said, are you sure that it is not nickel plated versus being stainless steel? The stocks should more of a reddish color than light tan color (though if someone has sanded the stocks, they will look more tan). By "carved design", are you referring to standard stock checkering?

    Thanks for the assistance. It may very well be a nickel plate, I'm not sure of how I would recognize the difference. The stock could be sanded because it lacks the varnish and shine of a normal wood stock. What would be the significance/purpose of sanding? As far as the carving, I'm not sure how else to describe it, but it's what I would say is a "western" design, somewhat floral, definitely not just checkering. The entire buttstock is designed in this manner.

    Hello WM22...

    There is no significance to sanding... other than it is very detrimental to the collector value. I would guess that somebody sanded the stocks to remove the original finish prior to carving them. The carving is also a big negative to the collector value. My best guess on the bright finish on the metal (what appears to be stainless), is that the same person who sanded the stocks also removed all of the original bluing, and was getting ready to refinish the entire rifle after carving the stocks.
