Open Chamber Storage?
I just finished cleaning from my trip to the range. 2 semi pistols and a semi rifle. I got to wondering about storing them with the slide/bolt locked back. If I stored them like that I could easily see the empty chamber when I took them out of the safe. Not a big deal I guess but wonder if I would do any spring damage from storing them like this.
Your thoughts guys?

I don't know if it will really do any damage, but I never liked the thought of leaving any spring compressed. Even the magazines I leave loaded around here are loaded only half full.

I feel the same way as MT357.
But, let me suggest a compromise: buy some orange plastic Empty Chamber Indicators & close the action on one these. I have some with NRA stamped on them, & I believe that they were made by MTM.

I agree with MT357. I don't like to leave springs compressed. I only partially load magazines that will be unused for long periods

Thanks guys. I guess I'm just getting lazy in old age! Sure I have an golden rod (or whatever) in the safe. The thought of having the barrel and chamber open sounded good to me just for air circulation. Plus, seeing it was safe when I would bring it out was convenient. The spring made me uneasy though.

Air circulation? .........Did it ever occur to you that circulating Air can carry Moisture...and that leads to an even worse problem by plating the Bore with Moisture and that Moisture will turn barrels and cylinders, etc. into a nice Brown Patina...or better known as Rust!............

Capt'n, sorry I didn't make myself clear. The guns are stored in a safe with a golden rod. Here is my thought:
If the rifle was put into the safe with (somehow) some moisture in the barrel & chamber and the action was closed how much longer would it take to evaporate down a 24" long small dia tunnel?
Not a big deal. The springs were my real concern. I do like the idea of being able to clearly see the chamber before they clear the safe door.
