Winchester 88 Recoil block
According to Winchester, many updates were done on this weapon prior to the 1957 production year. One of the improvements was rounded recoil block.(cloverleaf prior) If you look at any "exploded parts diagrams"

They have a cutoff serial number of 82900 for rifles made with the old recoil block or prior to 1957. Books like Madis list 82900 as being made in 1959. Seems to me that numbers 1-82900 were made in 1955 or 56. What
am I missing here?

If you are collecting model 88's , the book for you is "THE EIGHTY EIGHT" written by Douglas Murray. 1956 had a serial number to about 80,000

For us collectors There are pre'57 pre '64 and post '64. Cloverleaf tang to about #80,000.
